this is a picture of what appears to be a turretless tiger I tank towing a Russian IS-2 in the spring of '44. Is this ligit? Was it some kind of field modified Tiger tank?

I’ve not heard of this, but then anything seems possible, particularly when it comes to German armor in WWII… It is known the Germans made a Bergetiger/Ladungsleger Tiger variant with a large boom and winch mounted to the turret of a Tiger I tank, though there’s apparently been some debate about whether or not that vehicle was an armored recovery vehicle or something else…

I also came across this photo:

But this appears to be a Tiger that was on a test drive after undergoing repairs, at least according to this site where I found the photo:

In the end, I would guess what’s seen in your photo (if it’s legitimate) is a field modification of some kind.

I wonder if the JS-2 is at some German repair shop behind the lines and the Tiger towing it is another Tiger that has undergone repairs and is awaiting having its turret put back on. However you'd think at that point in the war they'd be rushing Tigers back up to the front, not using them as tow vehicles.

Missing-Lynx will probably be the place to get the answer...
