Strange mold lines on 1/18 Spitfire canopy?

Post by aferguson » Fri Jan 28, 2022 8:16 am

I just noticed that there are 2 lines, which look like mold lines on the center section of my Spitfire canopy. They go from front to back about 3/4 of the way up from the bottom of the center piece (the piece that slides open and closed).

At first I thought I had a long scratch or crack on my canopy but when I looked at the other side the exact same 'scratch' was there, same position, identical shape. There is a noticeable edge to the line when you feel the inside of the canopy, but nothing on the outside.

Do all Spitfire canopies have this or do I have a flawed one? It's in a very odd place if it's a mold line.

Same here. Never noticed until now. I've seen worse canopy flaws on 1/18 planes.

I've never noticed it before either, which Is ironic, because my eyesight is a lot worse now than it was 15 years ago when I got it.

The Spitfire I am referring to is NK K, which was the first release. I wonder if all releases had this line or if it was eliminated after the first release.

NK*K and ZP*A have it. Since they are just repaints, the canopies would be the same mold like the rest of the plane. Likely the other 2 variants have it.

Hey Andrew just checked my Spitfire, same as you and Axis and it's the NK K version.
At least there aren't fingerprints all over it. :)

Axis and Aferg, great to see some old timers posting again!

I’ve known about the mold lines on my XD Spitfire canopies for years… They are present on the canopies of all the XD Spitfires I own (NKK, ZPA, DWK) and never bothered me. The XD Spitfire is still a great model after all these years 8)

it is odd though that such a small piece, has two mold lines on it, but large canopies like the bubble top P47 and P 51 have none...

Were all of the 1:18 aircraft made by the same factory? That could be a big factor.
