For those of you with some extra cash to throw around and if you have a serious jones for the subject matter, there is a German 37mm PAK 36 anti tank gun around. It was actually made by a company called Hausser (also known as Lineol, Elastolin) in the 30's. It's a tin plate toy but pretty accurate in shape and just happens to be exactly 1/18 scale.
I've been after one of these for years but they usually go for well over $100 on Ebay. I finally won one for a mere $89. Most of you will probably think i'm crazy; any you'd be right, but i am very happy with my purchase. A little work and a custom xd gun crew and i'm all set...
Now watch 21c or BBI come out with one of these next year for $19.99
Oh and the little soldier is 1/25 scale so that's why the gun looks too big. It's not. It's about 9 inches long, 3 1/2 inches high and the wheels are 2 inches in diameter. As i said it's just about perfect 1/18.

Thats pretty cool! I have an old metal cannon as well. It was my father's when he was young (so I'm guessing its from the 1950s and not quite as old as yours). What makes the piece so cool is that its a German 88mm Flak cannon and is just a little shy of 1:18 scale! I need to make a cool little dio with it sometime, using Build-a-Rama sandbags and artillery rounds along with some XD Germans.

um......that could be worth a ton of money. Some of the old metal 88's go for several hundred dollars on ebay if they are in good shape.
Does it say hausser, elastolin, tippco or lineol anywhere on it?
Does it have a firing mechanism? If it works still that should increase the value. You might want to be sure before altering it.
Even old plastic marx 88's get a reasonable amount of money....

I'll have to check on the label when I get home. When I eventually do the dio, I have not plans to alter the gun piece in any way. Its painted green, and the paint has wear and tear from over the years - I'd expect a German 88 to look something like it!

Just a side note, there is a modern production 88mm piece that, from the conclusion of a friend of mine and myself, having seen it in person, is in 1/18 scale, it's an all metal piece and is static version of the 88mm rather than the mobile one but still a nice piece if you can afford the close to $90 U. S price tag (that's the price here though, it could actually be cheaper elsewhere). If anyone's interested in knowing more, I'll check the name of the manufacturer next time I swing by the shop, I can only recall that the line it belongs to is mostly scale metal models of 17th and 18th Century cannons though they have a 1/18 gatling also but I can't see too much use for that with my modern figures

, they also had a 1/18 guillotine too at the shop

that diecast piece has been around for a few years and gets mentioned from time to time on this board (well the old board). It's actually 1/16 scale or just a hair smaller, sort of 1/16.5 scale. It's not a bad piece but is unfortunately molded as if in recoil (ie as if the gun is firing).
I bought it and ended up selling it again, becasue, for my tastes, it was just too large to look right in 1/18. You can actually get them on ebay for $50, sometimes less (i got mine for $41).
I'm hoping now that 1/18 armour is staging a bit of a come back and BBI is in the mix that the day when we will have a proper 88 is not too far off..

aferguson,
You got thegun, now you need a place to set it up. Do you have any extra fountains? Take out the pillar with the Angel. Put your field piece in the middle and put some sandbags around the ring of the fountain.
Now you have a nice looking gun emplacement.
I have the fountain set and sandbags. I just need to find the field piece.
Later,
