Fellow Board members, I was thinking of buying a Verlinden 120mm German Heavy Mortar and other accessories to use with my XD guys. I have never actually seen the 120mm Verlinden stuff and was wondering if it is close enough to work or is it way to big? I would appreciate any info on this question.
Thanks Lance
Not great

I think they are too big. They may be even bigger than 1/16 guys, in which case you could save some cash and get the static FOV Germans. Someone might have some comparison pics next to some XD.

Well, I'm using VLS 120mm C-Rations and MREs with my guys and they look fine. (Look for the thread about the M274 Mechanical Mule to see an example)
I'm just about to install a pair of VLS 120mm M-60's on my M113 ACAV conversion. I measured them against the other M-60s in my box and they're not obviously out of scale. IIRC, they were the same size as one of the M-60s in my box (I did the comparison about six weeks ago, so I don't remember the exact results)
I would say go for it.

strictly speaking 120mm scale is 1/15, which is about 20% overscale...quite noticable but you may be able to get away with it on such items as small arms. Often these are overscale in 1/18 anyway.

Verlinden makes (or made) a lot of things in 120mm that NOBODY else makes in 1/18, like that German mortar.
That's why I had to use their ACAV conversion set (that, or make my own).

i've used New Ray mortars....they come as accessories with many of their 1/32 vehicles and playsets but are pretty close to 1/18 (as are their mini guns). They're kinda skinny though. They look like a cross between a US 3.1 inch mortar and a german 81mm. Certainly cheaper than the Verlinden alternative and closer to 1/18 scale (though not perfect).
You'd think after 5 1/2 years of 1/18 scale 21c would have made a decent mortar set, heavy machine gun set etc. Incredible.

I guess I've never seen a New Ray set with the minigun (not that I've looked much).
That's what I LOVE about this hobby!
Everybody's willing to share ideas

Lance,
Don't you have any of the BBI mortars that came with the paratroopers and WWII infantry??
Or is that not what you are looking for??

Let's be fair...It was October 2004 when bbi showed a "mortar crewman." Nobody else's fault you still can't buy one.
And when bbi came out with a WWII machine gun with tripod, they used a 50 cal instead of a 30 cal basically wasting the attempt.

Out of 12 WWII guys BBI gave us 9 paras. Too me, that's all just as "incredible" as 21st not making a machine gun team. Sometimes this stuff just doesn't make sense at first (like 3 Mustangs, 2 Corsairs, 2 Zeros, no Hurricane) but we are at the mercy of the companies and they seem to know what they're doing at this point. Let's hope.

Getting By w/ 120mm.

Yeah,...I think you could definately get by with mixing 1:18 with 120mm. stuff. There's only a slight difference here. To me,..120mm. is 1/16,..unless your just talking a 10th.,off scale. Just a fraction,..No big deal. Most of this stuff is slighty out of scale anyway. I've got a Verinden 120mm.,kit of the German 75mm.IG gun., which I'm going to use with my 1:18 dudes,..and it's a pretty close match. So I don't think there's nothing to be concerned about here.

I don't know what just happened here. I could'nt have double clicked.
