1:18 LVT-4 ?

I've always wanted an LVT-4 Amtrak in 1:18 and I'm seriously looking to scratch build one.

Having been a member for years I've seen all the amazing work many of you do, which inspired me to try my hand at it.

This is really the first time I've tried a large vehicle, but I've got experience making smaller props and items in 1:18.
My problem is that I really am unsure what the process is for creating these things accurately. I am aware that you can use smaller kits as references which is why I just ordered a 1:35 version of the vehicle.

I'll be using styrene mostly but I'm lost on how to actually go through the whole process. How do you go from the idea to making an accurate prototype that is scaled and detailed correctly.

I guess I'm wondering what are the common tools/materials/techniques/processes you use to create these amazing models from nothing.

Is 3D printing a viable option? How do I create irregular shapes and curves accurately and to scale? Where do I even start?

Forgive the rambling. I'm very serious about attempting this but I am very inexperienced and looking for direction from the board members, who I know are very talented in this department (pickel, jnewboy, aracula).

Thanks,
Andrew
