New Winter Diorama Photos

Post by tmanthegreat » Sun Jan 08, 2006 9:56 pm

Here's a sample of some winter diorama photos that I took over the weekend at my family's vacation house in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. of California. There was a light dusting of snow which created the perfect opportunity for some very simple winter dioramas, supposedly set during the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944-45. Black & white was used to create a more realistic effect.

Hey tman,
Great stuff - the outdoors and XD..what could be more fun!!!

And the fact it is an armor subject! :D

I'm in SoCal and was thinking of doing the same..heading up to the mountains and doing a winter shoot...but have ya seen the mountains lately! We just got what seemed like our first snow! That's SoCal for ya!

Thanks for sharing and great shoot! All the winter BOB stuff looks great in its element! I think color ones look great too.
It is the dang toy companies that have sometimes made me want to stop collecting toys!!!

Great pictures tman. They look very realistic and I love the black and white effect. I'd probably have to wait until the next 'ice age' to take similar pictures here in Miami

Always like your photos, Tman. You have a great eye for settings, angles, and framing of the shots to give them a realistic look.

I like the shot of the halftrack leading the Sherman away from the camera. Nice composition.

Tman great pics!!!! The scale of the foreground and background work very well. Just one :?: uh ok I see these pics were taken in North Calif.
If we get some snow here in N.Y. I'll take some pics of my winter Sherman and Panther... the only problem is its been in the 50's all week and 59 today. Nice work Tman.

Thanks for all the kind comments about the photos! It means alot coming from a group of discerning collector/historians :D

They weren't really too hard to create - I just found a spot out behind the house with the right trees & snow cover. Then I positioned the vehicles and troops and got wet & dirty kneeling and laying down in the snow & mud to get the proper angle for the photos. My camera was set on a wood block to keep it off the ground. One of these days I'll have to do some similar shots using some of the XD buildings.

Hopefully this will inspire othe members both new & old to try out their own dioramas!

Sweet job!! My favorite is the one with the Panther moving away from the camera. It looks pretty darn real!
