Small Scale Military Headquarters

i've seen these before..it is almost exactly 1/18 scale (wingspan is reported as 70 inches, so it's only 1 inch too big). Has all the glass parts done as vacuform, plus the nacelles are vacuform too.

Be warned, there are in reality no wings included with the kit. What you get are styrofoam wing cores, which are basically rectangular in shape and you have to build a wing around them from 1/16 inch balsa. No props or landing gear componants are included with the kit but are available as extras. You get a CD with the kit which tells you how to build it (that should give you an idea of the complexity involved)

You can buy the whole kit for $275 which includes free shipping (if you pay with Paypal) or you can buy fuselage, nacelles, clear vacuform parts etc seperately.

The photos of completed models on EAM's site look spectacular but it's a lot of work to get it to look like that, especially the wings. I don't know if i have the skill/patience to make it or not. In finished, displayable (but non-flyable) condition i reckon it will cost about $325-$350 for kit, extra parts, glue yadda yadda.

I hope someone on the board will have the onions to give it a try so we can get a good idea of what exactly is required to get this puppy together. It may be our best chance of getting a 1/18 fort.

Here's a quote from one of the guys in the build thread:

It's all relative i guess..



The exact scale of the B-17 is 1/17.8. Some of the guys in the thread even used XD pilot figures (or lightweight casts of them) to crew their Fortress!



By the way, there are no tail surfaces included in the kit either...just styrofoam cores and you have to build the tail surfaces around them. That includes the tail fin and rudder.

That is frigging awsome. I have nowhere to put one but I would loe for one of the comapny's to put one out. I know I would buy one and then figure out where to put it.

Thanks Razor for the great links and pictures. It's true, a 1:18, B-17 would be an awsome thing. I believe it can be built and successfully sold (see my poll thread titled "B-17 model in 1:18 scale" of 9/26/05, if you haven't.

I'm currently building a 1:28 Guillow's version of the B-17, which I'm planning on displaying along my 1:32 scale planes. The fuselage is done and now the wings and other surfaces are under construction.

I have customized the model to include nav, landing, rotating beacon, instrument panel and other intrerior lights. For the wings, I'll be including electric motors and authentic radial engine sound (thanks to the suggestions from several of the members here), and the entire model will be covered with 1/32 thick balsa wood rather than tissue. I also found 1:25 scale rubber tires which will replace the cheesy plastic ones that came with the model.

But that's not to say that I don't long for the 1:18 scale version.
