Re: 1/18 Tiger II To Zimm or Not To Zimm ????

Post by pickelhaube » Fri Jul 19, 2013 3:25 pm

OK Guys,

I am almost ready to send a few kits out.

Because of the Swiss cheese I created with the sides of the hulls I am filling sanding and painting the sides of the hulls for you.

I relocated the holes about 3 times

I need a show of hands for you guys who intend to apply zimmerit to your HENSCHEL TIGER II'S.

The Porsche Tiger II's all had zimmerit on them so I will just probably do a little fill and send them ( unpainted )

So I need to see a show of hands.

This will help expedite the production so please speak up !!!!

Finally some good news.

I was going to do zimmerit on mine. I like the way it looks better than the smooth sides

Looks great pickel!

On the note of zimm, what wear and tear would they show after being in the field? Would it weather the same as metal (i.e. would it rust or have worn metal areas)? I'm finishing up a 1/35 Tiger II, and I am not sure how I should detail the parts with zimm on them. [I'll post pics when I finish]

Back on topic. I am really envious of my fellow board members who are able to purchase this trophy now. Sorry if this has been addressed, but will the molds be in service for the next year, or is this the only run?

Either way, keep up the amazing work!

B-17,

As far as the zimm goes I have seen pics with 100% zimm and some with chunks fallen blasted or rubbed off.

Modelers usually depict with a base dk yellow or red primer were the zimm once was.

Zimmerit was applied over red primer like Mathew said. Most worn off spots on models are usually red primmer but any type of impact from an incoming shell would shatter and blast it off down to the metal. If you are going to do this battle damage look the center of the impact should blackened and bare metal with a slight dent or groove from the impact surrounded by red primer chipped then the Zimmerit would start again. I have seen also where a shell has caused fracture cracks running out from the impact through the surrounding Zimmerit. Also if you are doing a winter camo the impact spot (bare metal) could have alittle rust if it had been there for awhile. Hope this helps.

I WILL BE MAKING NONE WITH ZIMMERMIT.

THE QUESTION WAS MADE FOR THOSE WHO WOULD BE APPLYING ZIMMERMIT TO THEIR OWN MODEL.

Again I will NOT be applying any zimermit to these models.

So for the guys who have spoken up I will not put a primer on your models ( for those who will zimm )

The majority of the others MAY have a coat of primer on them if needed.

Hey Normandy,

I have models of the ring camo before but have never seen a pic of the actual thing.

Thanks for finding this one .

Although it does seem impractical it is still cool looking .

Sweet pics !!!

Hey Guys,

I was making the next kits and realized that I shorted the first 3 kits.

I only sent half of the loose track links needed to do both sides.

I am running out of resin and hopefully I will have enough to make and send them.

I ordered a gallon unit of resin from my supplier and another clerk sold it to someone else.

So I ordered 2 more gallon units under strict orders not to sell them to anybody else.

Hopefully I can get the extra track links out this coming week.
