BBI F-18 Sidewinders Review

Since this new 1:18 repaint has just come out within the past week or so and has seemingly merited little overall discussion (compared to the earlier threads about it), I figured I'd post a review :) I have only the S1 "Golden Dragons" F-18 to draw from for comparisons.

The plane comes disassembled and well-packaged in its box, as has been the case with recent BBI releases. I have come to really like this setup as it seems to protect the model very well for shipping, especially when compared to the old window boxes. The parts for the F-18 were all stored in various boxes that doubled as packing support and were wrapped in a soft foam "cloth" as opposed to being in bags as on the other new BBI releases.

Really, in terms of functions and features, this F-18 repaint is no different than any of the others and is essentially the same tooling BBI released back in 2004. The model is very durable, sacraficing working features for something that won't fall apart. (Recall how JSI did not do that with their F-14). Cockpit is detailed, but the details are mostly decals, as on all other BBI F-18s. Features include removable ordinance, retractable gears, rolling wheels, opening canopy, though the tail hook on my "Sidewinders" F-18 works much better than on my S1 "Golden Dragons" model. You have to assemble more parts than earlier F-18s, including the tails.

Where the model differs from earlier versions is in the quality of the plastics and paints.

The plastic has a hard, sturdy feel to it throughout the model. For example, the horizontal stabilizers are not so rubbery and the landing gear appear to use a better plastic. I don't think this plane will have the gear-sagging issues the earlier models had. Another very nice tooling difference is that BBI seems to have better-covered or eliminated the screw plugs. On my S1 F-18, while the screws are covered, the plugs do not fit flush with the fuselage and are not matched to the base paint coat, leaving partial holes that are quite visible when viewed from beneath. This is NOT the case with the "Sidewinders" F-18 and the properly-covered screws really improves the look of the model.

Engines are still the same with that shallow exhaust pipe. This is as toyish as its always been, but BBI did paint the afterburner area black. This helps hide the inaccuracies and gives the engine more "depth". The engines also have a more realistic color and weathering effect than earlier models.

On the rest of the plane, it seems BBI likely used a basecoat for painting and then added flat paints over it. The plastic does not have that "shine" to it that the S1 version has. The plane is reasonably weathered, though the weathering is not as heavy as on the S1 aircraft.

You can find some really great photos of this aircraft on some small retailer websites like Badcat, FlyingMule, AG's store and others so I've foregone the detail shots. What I thought would be helpful are a couple comparison or "legacy" shots between the S1 "Golden Dragons" and the S8 "Sidewinders"

For me, the BBI F-18 has always stood as the original "Big Ticket" item going back to when it was first released 8 years ago and was twice the size of anything offered by any other company at the time. It has thus always carried a certain "wow" factor with it. While the price nearly doubled, I felt it was time to expand the F-18 fleet and am glad to get an aircraft with a unique, but accurate, paint scheme and one that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The F-18 is a good compliment to anyone's moden aircraft collection.

Thank you for the review, tman! Looks like this release is a significant improvement over the original, in a variety of ways that all add up.

can you make a picture of both the F-18 but with a swapping of wings & tails ? just to see if the colors match (you cans see sometime various state of repaint for some planes during maintenance)

Plus i want to check that it's the same moulds.

Thank you :)

Nice review, Tman.

Mine is inbound, and hopefully will be here next week.

Sounds like BBI has made some minor improvements, which are all that are really needed, as the first release was pretty good. Would have been nice if they could have done something about the shallow exhaust, but that would have taken a change to the mold, something that they obviously didn't want to do. No big deal, as it is only visible if you look directly into the exhaust nozzle.

Another good 1/18 release from BBI, with them and Merit being the only players left in this scale.

Snake,
Have a look at what member Pizzaguy made to replace the exhaust pipes. I got a pair from him, and like you I am waiting now for my own F-18:

Thanks, Granch,

I knew these were available, just don't know if I trust myself to do the conversion without screwing it up.

I have the Skyworks F-16 nozzle, but looking at the pulling and tugging etc, still haven't tried it, as again, don't want to break the model, just to add a better nozzle. Chicken, I know.

Anybody done the F-16, or F-18 nozzle replacement ?

Well, thanks to Tman's terrific review and comparison photos I now have to spend this weekend clearing more space in my small cramped office here at home for another large jet that I had no business purchasing. Thank goodness I'm not married yet. lol

Also just got my bagged F-18 pilots in a few days ago. Very glad BBI released this figure as a seperate piece as modern pilots are needed! Mine are now in my JSI F-14, where they look more accurate than the BBI helicopter pilots I was using (I had already made custom yellow helmets). They actually were tighter to fit into the cockpit than the older BBI helo figures, but look far more accurate 8)

Yeah, I did the same too. Acquired four altogether. Two for each F-14. They should help make things look a bit more realistic since the jets are hanging from my ceiling in a flight configuration wing to wing. I'm glad they released both the F-16 and F-18 with pilots.

One of the key features I also noticed on the Sidewinders is the matching nose cone. It just looks a lot better in my opinion. That and I'm a big fan of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Maybe because I'm a Sci-fi nut. lol Wish they had different armament but I'm not complaining. Though an F-18E/F would sure be nice to see.

Just received my purchase yesterday of the F-18 Sidewinders flaunting the new aggressor scheme variant. I must say its worth seeing in person. The photos like with everything else just aren't enough to really capture the true essence of this incredible fighter jet. The camouflage seen throughout the paint scheme alone really sets it apart from anything else I've collected over the years aircraft wise. I'm very glad I pulled the trigger on this item last week. Look forward to hanging it with the others tonight. :D

Well... the agressor camo sheme is excellent, but I prefer the old uniform light grey... 'cause my elder son doesn't want to sell me his "dragon" F-18, I'm following the eBay course of a "red devil" one. But 380 $ is high in comparison with the 150-170 $ for a "sidewinder" :(
What do members here think about this price?

The price for the "Sidewinders" F-18 is no doubt high. It doubles the original $90 price tag the "Golden Dragons" F-18 had in 2004 for an aircraft tooling that is not that much different. But we're not getting an exact copy...

As I noted in my review above, BBI did use better quality plastics and paints, which really improve the model. The landing gear and major surfaces are no longer rubbery and should stand up better over time without warpage. They also properly covered the screws on the underside, so it has a smooth finish. The shallow intakes and shallow afterburners are still the major drawbacks, though with a little paintwork, BBI has tried to make the afterburners look better. Their quality of paints is also superior to the first version, having more of a flat look and a nice base coat.

Overall, I'm very happy with mine and do not feel that it was one of those items where I didn't get my money's worth.

Well, so, I should better buy the Sidewinder. Good bye, Red Devil...

Again I didn't want to create another thread on the same subject, so I revived tmanthegreat's old thread. Hope he doesn't mind.

Got this Hornet awhile back but I didn't have the time to find the correct thread to share my photos.
I use to have the Golden Dragon version but I eventually sold that off and moved on to other stuff.
So it feels good that I finally got this again as it has all the improvements over the previous version.
