Small Scale Military Headquarters

Gentlemen:

Recently I began construction of a 1:28 scale B-17 balsa bomber. I'm applying electric motors to the engines, along with a speed controller that will allow me to go from idle to full throttle power. I've also purchased and plan to install speakers behind each engine cowling, all connected to a sound card playing radial engine sound. My problem is that I don't know where to purchase such digitized sound, and would very much appreciate your input in this matter.

What about using the electronics from the Tamiya 1/16th sherman rc tank?
It has digitally recorded engine noises from a Continental R975-c4 9 cylinder, 4 cycle, radial air cooled (15,945cc displacement 460hp/2400 rpm output)
Engine noises are proportional to speed/stick (idle through to full throttle)
volume is adjustable .These features are contained in the MF (multifunction) unit, which plugs into a speaker and a dual speed controller, (DMD unit).
The cheapest way to get all this stuff is to buy an entire Sherman full-option kitset(56014), use what you need, then sell off the rest.

If there is a Discovery Channel store in a mall near you, you can get a cd called "Round Sounds". I bought it and just love it. All of the sounds on it are of radial engines. It has start-up, fly-bys, all sorts of stuff. It even has sounds from the Reno Air Races.

You can use the "start up" and "idle" sounds from a movie like "12 O'clock Hign" and use a digital recorder as Centone suggests.

Quick and easy, and cheap, as long as you have access to a digital recorder.

Keep in mind that sounds vary, even from the same type of engine, depending on the age and condition of the engine. Distinct sounds of certain engines still can have differences audible to even the average ear.

Tracer, thanks for the lead on the audio CD. I called the Discovery Store customer service and they said "Not all stores carry that CD" & "We don't stock that item for online ordering".

Well... I just had to have those beautiful round sounds in my living room.

Gentlemen, I'm currently researching and contemplating your suggestions. I'll let you know what's going on with this particular issue as I get more info.

Along those lines, the original B-17 kit I purchased (Willow's) is the "Thunderbird". According to the company, there is a painting of this aircraft at the Air and Space Museum, but I'm not totally crazy about its paint job. Can you make suggestions as to what would be the most beautiful paint job (in your opinion), for a European Theater B-17?
