Perry was a C-130 pilot in the USAF...although some sources mistakenly say he flew F-4 Phantoms.

Although Perry flew C-130's, there is a popular pic floating around of him climbing into a F-4 with gravity suit and oxy mask. Again, I won't describe how the pic was depicted further because of politics.
I saw the 21C plane also.

Having grown up in Dallas as the son of a Vought engineer, I was going to say that the plane is appropriate as one of Texas' most significant aerospace icons. But I thought to check on the history, suddenly realizing that I had assumed all my life that Vought had always been a Texas-based company. Something that had hung in the back of my head all these years -- why the heck was a contractor so closely identified with the Navy in inland Texas? -- made me look up the history:
In postwar 1949, Vought moved operations to Dallas, Texas where the former North American "B" plant was located. Initiated by the Navy, who feared having their two main aircraft manufacturers located on the East Coast posed an unnecessary risk, Vought moved 27 million pounds of equipment and 1300 employees in 14 months, a record breaking industrial move at the time.
In 1954, the company fully separated from United Aircraft and became the independent Chance Vought Aircraft Inc.

So ... when they were churning out that inverted-gull beauty, they weren't in Texas. The F4U was an icon of my childhood -- LTV stuff was always all over our house. You learn something every day ...

Since Rick was an Air Force pilot, I wonder if he's got a little collection going himself... I also wonder where the 21C Corsair in the ad came from.
