Small Scale Military Headquarters

Has anyone ever built one of these in 1/18? is there a kit I am unaware of?

I would really like to see a Kettenkrad in 1:18 scale. Only one in 1:16 is as a kit available here in Germany. And it is extremly expensive.

no, nothing in 1/18. 21c was going to do a Komet/kettenkrad combination but it didn't happen. I don't get the populairty of the kettenkrad, myself, but lots of people seem to like it.

I rather like the SDK-2 Kettenkrad. Its sort of an interesting combination between a motorcycle and a tracked vehicle. The real thing could be modified to mount a machine gun for defensive armament. It could tow a trailer light artillery, even aircraft. The vehicle carried 2-3 soldiers as well.

21c did a decent Kettenkrad in 1:6. The vehicle has a nicely detailed driver station with seat, throttle/brake levers, dials, etc. Behind the driver seat is an opening engine compartment with engine. The passenger seat opens to reveal a storage compartment. Treads roll, front wheel rolls and turns. A trailer was included that attached to a hitch. The latest version of the 21c 1:6 Kettenkrad was a really nice set, coming with the vehicle, trailer, two DAK Fallschrimjager figures, their accessories, and a crate. It was an affordable 1:6 vehicle set that got you a tracked vehicle that was larger than a motorcycle, but which didn't take up the space (or have the cost) of a tank.

I imagine a potential 1:18 version would have been similar in its tooling to the 1:6 version. Would have been a neat little vehicle, especially for the Fallschrimjager figures to ride on

Yea by its self its not spectacular but on a diorama or towing a Komet, .. Badass

Have several of the 21st 1/6 scale. I always thought they were a very cool vehicle. Dragon also had a 1/6 and released a couple of upgrade kits thru Cyber-Hobby. I noticed on ebay that DID has a 1/6 with metal wheels and tracks (non RC) which I had never seen before. Its been awhile, but I remember seeing the RC 1/18 one, which as mentioned was pretty expensive.

The DID 1/6 Kettengrad, far superior than the 21C. I have two of the DID Ketts.

The two shown are the DID, a gray and a 3 color commo. Metal trailers came with both, the gray Kett trailer is behind the "250".

We actually got together on that one.

My ideas and he did all the work.

That was back when I was more of a collector rather than a builder. He combined a 1/32 half track with a 1/18 motorbike.

He made a couple of them.

Grunt was on the Kett and I am not sure what happened to it.

I'm lucky enough to own the one in the pictures from the Hun's site. Bought it off him a number of years ago. A fantastic piece and made really well. I am not sure how many or if he made any more. It is one of my favorite pieces. It really should have been a no brainer for 21st century to make that as a small vehicle, they would have had no trouble selling them.

I've always wondered how do you steer that thing?? Are the tracks actuated by turning the bars or is the direction of the bike wheel what turns it??

I've wondered that about halftracks...

Halftracks are steered by the front two tires. The tracks do nothing but propel the halftrack forward. That is fact. I've driven my buddies White halftrack many times.

The Kett is the same, that is steered by the front wheel. A hundred years ago, when I first got into the MV hobby, a antique vehicle dealer in surburban NYC had a Kett for sale. I examined the vehicle to buy it but the dealer and I could not agree in price. He had these crazy ideas about the vehicles worth, he said to me "How do you price a vehicle when it is one of four left in the world. Three in museums (two in Germany and one in England." I knew this was a bald faced lie but I could not convince him, I knew more than him. Too bad.

Popeye, you got it. When you turned the handlebar slightly the wheel would steer the vehicle. The harder the turn or the more force used to turn the handlebar, the more force would be applied to engage a track brake.
Hard right, right track brake on and left track free to push the Kred..........almost like a tank....well like modern a tank.
Hmmm another case of technology before its time.

Just a little different from the one I wanted to buy. I offered the dealer $4,000 and he wanted $8,000. But that was 1967, and a few were on the market for $4-5,000 around.

I'll buy what Normandy says about the steering. I never got to "test drive" the Kett.

I remeber reading somewhere that they were allowed to keep making Kettenkrads for many years after the war becuase they were being used as farm tarctors or something like that; and for that reason they were a more readily available German vehicle for collectors.

Pickel, I never knew that fact you and Hun worked on it and now Maritime now owns it......cool.
Would a set of 1:18 Sd Kfz 251 tracks work? rather than 1:32. I've been looking at my 1:6 Kettenkrad (21st Cent.) and figures, scaling down to 1:18 looks like it might.... What do you think?

I have a junk 1/32 Sdkfz 7 that I could probably convert!
