This weekend I am setting out to get a big hoard of XD. This will be cool almost as cool as the epic trip I took from driving to Virginia to New Orleans.

I was on the phone with the Hun stopping at every Wal-Mart in between. I was driving a Chevy full bed pick up and by the time I got home it was FULL.

Epic !!!!!!!!

Anyway what to do with all this stuff ? Fist thing that come to mind custom fodder.

I have made a few kits in the past simple add ons to full builds.

The simple stuff was affordable the larger builds kind of pricey. I can go on and on about defending the price of the full builds but you guys have heard it before.

There could be a compromise. Take for instance the German Sdkfz 250. Rommel's GRIEF. That kind of looks like a baby Sdkfz 251. BUT THE WHEELS ARE ALL WRONG. One of our talented builders has built one already . I forget who it was . It looked great !!

The major part of my T-34 build was the running gear. Wheels and tracks.

Now suppose I were to build and make the 250. If I just build the body and you guys were to cannibalize a Hanomag would this be good enough ?

I would say that the body only will be around $100. The full build $250. That is a big price difference. BUT THE WHEELS ARE WRONG.

The same thing could apply to the Indy cargo truck. Make that into a Sdkfz 7 or something close using the Hanomags running gear . Again the wheels would be wrong. But the Hanos are still kind of cheap.

The Sdkfz 7 is huge. That means expensive. I would say that a full build for that would be $300-$400  What if I were to just make the body $150 ?
And you guys just put the Hanos gear on. I could make a couple of wheels and track lengths to stretch the Hanos gear to make it work.

This semi scale or stand off scale could work on other subjects.

Crossing the line of scale to GI Joe for close enough.

I know a lot of you would want your customs to be 100% but what it were close ?

This would apply to armor only. It is hard to fudge on aircraft and make it look good.

so i guess you're saying you'd make a sdkfz 7 body that's underscale, so that it would fit on the hanomag running gear? It would be around 1/20 scale in that case. Interesting idea but if i were to go that route i'd just convert an Indy truck myself and use a hanomag. I've had thoughts of doing that but it will look so dinky beside the big 88 i haven't bothered and have been hoping against hope for a true 1/18 sdkfz 7 to come out, somehow.

What about this? Make a 1/18 sdkfz 7 body. For running gear, make it like chap mei would. That is sculpted all in one piece. I've suggested this idea before and people balked at it but the reality is these resin kits are too expensive for most to buy and costs need to be cut to bring the price down.

Resin kits are static anyway, the tracks don't roll, so why is it a problem if the running gear is molded all in one piece? Would that reduce the cost of a full build 1/18 sdkfz 7 significantly?

I like the idea of using the hanomag chassis for these conversions, it does'nt bother me if the scale is off a bit 8)
