Decal Problem w/Special Edition 21ST 1/18 P40 Flying Tiger

In my semi-annual dusting of my "hanging" 1/18 aircraft, I noticed that the Chinese emblem decals on the wings of my 21st 1/18 P40 were literally disintegrating as I was wiping them off! These decals came separate in the box and had to be applied by the new owner...I can't remember if they were water slide or self adhesive.
Anyone else had this problem...There was no direct sun light on the plane, however a nearby ceiling vent could have dried them out?

The extra (more accurate) decals should have been waterslide. If the surface was not preped correctly, then any heat source or direct sunlight will deteriorate them quickly. They will crack, peel up and flake off. You should be able to get replacements (at cost to you) and, with a little work, can make them good as new and better able to survive longer.
Preping the area is simple. Clean and smooth the surface as much as you can. If you buy one of those finger nail buffing sticks (not sanding) you can buff the area till it has a high gloss shine. If that isn't possible, coat the area with Future Floorwax sprayed on with even thin coats. Let that dry at least 24 hours before you apply the decal. Once the decal is on (and dry after 24 hours again), recoat the decal and area with another coat or two of Future and let that dry. Later, get a rattle-can of clear flat and warm it up in a bowl of warm (not hot) water and shake it up very well. The flat surface appearence will return with a few light coats and you're done. The decal is now stuck firmly and sandwiched between clear protective layers. However, direct sunlight (UVA and UVB) will fade the color pigments and cloud the Future yellow so, no more direct sunlight for long periods of time.
