1/18 Mig-29 found

Post by aferguson » Thu Aug 04, 2005 5:30 pm

Another r/c kit. This one's nearly exactly 1/18. Length is pretty much perfect, span is 4 inches too big but looking at the pictures of it, it's not noticable.

According to the seller the kit is duron foam that is built up in layers like a cake by gluing them together. I gather this means that the parts are pre-molded and you stick them all together.

Looks pretty good when assembled and painted. Even comes with missiles and a clear canopy. Not cheap. $125 but that's because it comes with a lot of the r/c gear too.

Here's a link to an auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

Here's a link to a video of it flying: http://rcelectricflight.com/Mig-29%20Complete%20Vid.WMV

The seller's site is www.chuckshobbies.com

Lots of other r/c planes there too...not sure if any of them would be 1/18 or not. Have to do some exploring when i get a chance.. :)

Anyone know anything specific about this kit they can add/correct?

Wow, I like that. A little too pricey, but man that would be cool to get. I think they also have a 1/18 or 1/20 foam SU-27 out. That would be awesome - recreate the Eritrea/Ethiopia dogfights. Once again, it looks like RC-land is the best place to find Russian (and other foreign) fighters.

I'm also interested in the foam build-ups. There are rapid prototype machines that rather than build plastic parts, they cut out layers of styrofoam to glue together to make models. If this is done like that, that would be interesting. All we need is some entrepeneur to custom make and plane you want. Crud, I'm dreaming again....

Had to go check out their web site for other planes. End up they are the ones who also made the SU-27, along with some other cool planes.

Based on their little demo that shows the models in 3d, I would bet they are using a foam cutter controlled by a 3D modeling program. Looking in their forums they say they would consider doing custom Lancasters. Wonder what other custom planes they would do.

i already checked into the SU-27....too small for 1/18 unfortunately. I think there is a close to 1/18 Sepecat Jaguar and a Hawker Tempest however. I've emailed for full dimensions and havent heard back yet so not sure on these. Will post when i get the scoop..

At this point it looks as though there are kits of the following aircraft that are very nearly 1/18 scale: Mig 29, Sepecat Jaguar, Mig 3, F-5, BAe Hawk, P-38, Me 109E, P-51B and maybe a Hawker Tempest but i think it's too small, more like 1/22 but i'm trying to get more info on it. All have clear canopies but no cockpit to speak of. I'm not sure if there is any u/c...don't think so except maybe on the Mig 29. They are made of a very dense foam, stronger than most other foams used on r/c aircraft. The foam may have a bit of a surface texture.

Except for the Mig 29 the kits are $67 each. He assures me they are very easy to build, even for a beginner and that in three or four evenings you can put one together....most of the time spent is waiting for the glue to dry (you need to use 5 minute epoxy).

I may order the Mig 3 and the Jaguar and see how they look. Shipping is a bit high at $27 but each additional item is only $5 more so you may want to order more than one at a time.
