1/18th Scale Dauntless? This may be as close as we get...

I recently visited the Naval Park and Museum in Buffalo NY. They have many great exhibits including a p-39 in william Shomo's markings and a Fletcher class destroyer the USS. Sullivans. In one of the museum buildings i spotted this Dauntless hanging from the ceiling. It appears to be Dead on 1/18, and there are two bbi Corsair pilots sitting comfortably in the cockpit!! Anyone have a guess as to what this is? Could be a 1/16 scale Gullows kit...sure doesn't look like it's balsa...

Regardless, maybe this will wet our appetite until someone eventually releases one.

OK, this looks very nice, but why is the plane in a dive with dive flaps deployed and landing gear down? I'm not a plane guy but this does not look right. Am I wrong?

Maybe the pilot is Captain "Wild" Bill Kelso and he is landing on the Japanese carrier to capture it. 8)

Perhaps they are replacement gear he purchased for 69.99 and he didn't want the money wasted. :D

Greetings

There were several balsa Dauntless kits besides the Guillows one. I think Berkeley made one years back, and I had a Berkeley A-12 Shrike at one time that was very close to the size of a 1/18 scale XD plane like we have. I'd be willing to bet this was built from either an older kit or the plans from an older kit, much of it looks to be balsa/control line styling

That may also explain the landing gear. Many of those kits came with molded landing gear only for the down position. So the builder may have installed them the way they came in the kit. Whoever did it put in a lot of work into it and it looks very nice, you don't see builds like that anymore from the old kits, especially if that is what it is.

Saw a 1/18 scale resin and fiberglass Dautless on ebay the other day. Don't have the $350 to get it.

Looks good, but it is a kit.And you would have to be a good modeler to do a good job on this one. Not for everybody, bet hey, at least it is available. :D
