was watching this classic the other day and had to sit down and watch the Yeager scene- flying the f-104 to 104K ft. in the background in the hangar when he is bumming a stick of Beamons (sp?) gum from Crossfield, i saw the f-86, then in the background of the f-104 i saw the f-102 taxiing......then the f-104 takeoff was THE AWESOME.....i might just have to try and customise an f-104 to that scene......

<GASP!>

GREAT Film! I would highly recommend watching it!

APOLLO 13 is a great movie to watch after "The Right Stuff".
It's like a sequel...

There is one scene (the format in which it was shot) that has been copied in a multitude of others films.

The Right Stuff (1983):

RESERVOIR DOGS (1992):

ARMAGEDDON (1998):

Have you seen the movie called Apache? It had Nicolas Cage in it - about the Apache helicopter. It was just as bad if not worse - the only movie I ever walked out on.

YT - you've got to see The Right Stuff. For any aviation or space enthusiast it just ain't right not to have seen it.

The gum is "Beemans" and last year CVS (a drug store chain) had packs for sale ... it actually tastes good, its probably sugar mixed with more sugar. They also had "Blackjack" and "Clove".

And yes, I thought of the Right Stuff when I bought the gum. :)

As for watching Apollo 13 after the Right Stuff, I also highly recommend the Tom Hanks produced miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon". It actually includes some of the Project Gemini before walking through Project Apollo. The Apollo 1 recap is heavy hitting, as is its very different POV for Apollo 13. The series goes as far as to tell one story large from the POV of the wives.

And if you enjoy Apollo 13, a book well worth reading is Gene Kranz's "Failure Is Not An Option".

I rank Apollo 13 and the Right Stuff very highly on my IMDB list.

I can't believe you're knocking the Apache movie. I mean come on, the helicopter doing a loop. Show me another movie where a helicopter does a loop. :D

PCOUGHRAN:

I saw the Nicolas Cage movie titled FIRE BIRDS many years ago and the only thing I remember about it is thinking Cage had a good artistic reputation at that time, so how did get involved in that piece of crap.

Clint Eastwood's SPACE COWBOYS is a rare movie in that you can see an SR-71 and an F-105 in the same scene. I think there's an F-101 in the scene, too. Both of those jets rarely appear in movies.

An F-106 appears in THE RIGHT STUFF and an F-111 is in OCTOPUSSY ---both are movie rarities.

A F-106? I don't remember that. Was it in the test pilot footage with all the other experimental aircraft? I thought that the Right Stuff ...

It's a great movie "The Right Stuff" that is.

Although... some say that it wasn't Chuck Yeager that broke the sound barrier, but it was George Welch. Yes that George Welch of Pearl Harbor fame. He definitely had the "right stuff"

Chuch Yeager just "officially" broke the sound barrier:

Uh...Ben Affleck plays him (George) in another movie.

RESERVOIR DOGS (1992):
Yeah I've seen it.... it's not bad, but kind of bizarre. That pic looks like a cross between Men in Black and The Blues Brothers...

MCALMARI:

The F-106 (it appears to be an F-106B two-seater) taxis past Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) as he inspects the new F-104.

Another movie rarity: an OV-10 Bronco is in the James Bond movie, THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.

Also, Hobby Master's F-100 Super Sabre flown by Col. Harold Comstock, was depicted in the movie WE WERE SOLDIERS. The first F-100 had dropped napalm on US troops, and Comstock's F-100 was the second about to drop napalm on the characters played by Mel Gibson and Sam Elliot, when Gibson ordered Comstock to abort his bombing run. I bought the Comstock F-100 for my North Carolina collection because the characters played by Gibson and Elliot are former 82nd Airborne paratroopers based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Also, Madeline Stowe's character attended the University of North Carolina.

As long as we are wondering on OT on a thread devoted to 1/18.

The gum "Beemans" and "Black Jack" and "Clove" are still available, you just have to look for it -

A genuine blast from the past 8)

What are we gonna discuss next? Whether Superman can beat up Batman? Or maybe Wonder Woman was the hottest thing on pre-cable TV? Or the terrible news that Martin and Lewis broke up?
