Small Scale Military Headquarters

For the D-day anniversary this year, Time put out a commerative magizine. In there, they show what looks like a flatbed-with-wood-sides variant of a Dodge chasis. The picture only shows the back of the truck crossing a mulberry bridge. Has anyone ever seen info on one of these? Is it a type of WC53? I have a command car in pieces that I'd like to convert to this, if my guess is correct that it uses the same chassis.

I don't care for the web site owner, but the site has very good information on pre and post war vehicles.

As for the Dodge that you have described sounds to me to be a WC51 or WC52. The 52 has the winch as the 51 doesn't. TTT could help you more, he is a truck expert. He helped me with my question on the Duece. I hope that helps.

The WC-51 and WC-52 weren't flat beds. Both had raised sides with fold down wood sides. They would look kind of like a flatbed. The only other truck like that was the WC-55 which was called the M6 when it carried the bed mounted 37mm Anti tank gun. Without the gun that truck also had high sides (about 18" high), just like the WC-51 and 52 only without the wood sides.

The WC-51 and WC-52 (winch) had exactly the same chasis as the Command Car. The Sixth Division has several examples of guys taking 1/6 21c CC's and converting them to WC-52's. Some were done very well.

Using the WC-63 would be a waste and means messing with the rear axles.

Using the CC would work out very well. Thanks to a tip by the King Tipster Centone I have a NIB 1/6 CC just sitting waiting in my bunker annex to be turned into a WC-52 .......if only I can find the time.

The more I look at the picture, the more it looks like a 1/2 ton hardtop cargo with a homemade bed. The bed and cab protector looks to be constructed on a local level (handmade) to transport whatever it is in the bed.

We still had 1/2 tons in service on D-Day but the 3/4 tons were replacing them. Neat little trucks, I owned one and they were faster than the 3/4 tons. Some 1/1 guys prefer them to the 3/4. Not me, but some.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at some of 1/2-ton pictures. I like "home-made" vehicles - allows alot of freedom in making the model. The picture actually was in a Time magazine that I scanned, which is why it was so blurry.

Got "Honeycanudo" stuff for some out of town company comming (running from Huricanes, I guess ). They actually expect me to leave my Puter and ignore the six sites and boards I monitor. And what about eBay??? Can't figure some people They just do not understand toys, and how important they are........to us at least.
