RC Plane Talk
Re: RC Plane Talk
here is a nice youtube video of the su-34 showing it in detail and close up. The pilots in the cockpit are way overscale, so ignore them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h2xB8uA3U0
Aerial Hobby no longer has them. I ordered, what turned out to be the last one but they emailed me to tell me it was broken and refunded my money.
So now, it will cost $55 more to buy at another place...$213 total. Ouch. They don't have the retracting gear at that price...just the airframe with a bunch of servos.
I have finally been able to figure out the scale exactly. It's 1/16.8, so a bit overscale but exactly the same scale as the BBI F-16 (which i have also been able to finally figure out exactly).

That Su-34 looks awesome so decided to order as well until I too found out they were out of stockaferguson wrote:here is a nice youtube video of the su-34 showing it in detail and close up. The pilots in the cockpit are way overscale, so ignore them.

Re: RC Plane Talk
yes it's a bummer. I emailed them and asked if they would be getting more and they said 'may not be so soon'. Whatever that means.
I believe aerial hobby purchases end of runs, minor defects etc which is how they can offer prices much lower than their competition. So, it is very possible they won't be getting them in at all. They still have green ones but meh, i don't like the green ones.
So, the only other choice is rc castle, which has them for $175 plus $39 shipping. A cost of $53 more, which doesn't make me happy, needless to say.
The reason these things are so expensive is because they come with a bunch of servos, something like 23 and that is adding a lot to the cost. Otherwise they'd be around a $100 like other r/c foamies of this size range.
I"m probably going to cave and still get one. Too awesome to pass and i think they may be gone in a few months....just trying to wrap my head around paying $53 more. Blah.

An-2 Colt. Any vietnam war lovers out there might like this one. Used by NVA as a torpedo bomber (yes i said torpedo bomber). Also used for raiding US outposts, surveillance etc.
A bit big at 1/16.4 scale. Unusual subject for sure.

Re: RC Plane Talk
aferg, are you aware of any of the following in RC, that look fairly accurate in size and shape?
Super Stallion
Chinook
Sea Knight
Osprey
Dauphin
Thanks

Re: RC Plane Talk
super stallion was supposed to have been released this year but i've heard nothing more about it:
http://skyhunterhobby.com/#/600-super-s ... 4537004311
probably on the big side, 1/17 or a bit larger. That's all i know....may still be coming out, may be cancelled. Dunno. Will probably cost $500
there is a ch-53 stallion body currently available, it's about 1/16.5 scale and the price is reasonable, relatively:
http://shop-rc.causemann.de/CH-53-Rumpf ... chrauber_1
1/18 osprey also supposed to come out this year:
http://www.rotormast.com/rm/
seems a bit spanney for 1/18 to me but looks ok from what i can tell...that's all i know as well....probably pricey.

Re: RC Plane Talk
Thanks aferg
It seems pretty surprising to me that nobody has done a Chinook. It's been around for 40+ years, still in use, and it's a well known helo.

How about this one: http://model.hirobo.co.jp/english/index.html If I've done my calculations right it looks about 1/16. Just go under products.Ferrari250GTO wrote:Thanks aferg

yes the Hirobo is 1/16....i figured it was a bit too big but if not, it's an option. I believe they cost $5000 but you may be able to buy just the body only but it would still cost a ton.
there is also another chinook, that is 1/22, around 27 inches long iirc. You can buy just the airframe and it's under $100 shipped. It's made from thin clear plastic.

these have been for sale for about a year now. Email directly and find out the current price and shipping costs. You can buy just the body kit, without any of the r/c stuff. You will have to make your own rotors and rotor hubs though.....but that's true of any of these r/c helicopter bodies.

Re: RC Plane Talk
That looks pretty good, shape definitely looks right, size could be better, but its not like there's a choice. I'll have to think about how I would make an interior for it, if I do buy it.aferguson wrote:http://www.tech-mp.com/twinn_rexx.htm

Re: RC Plane Talk
update on the CH-53 Sea Stallion i mentioned above:
the overall length of the finished model is 1170mm according to this:
http://docu-and-info.de/docustart/index ... le=CH53Bau
It's the 600 size, with dimension A being 1170mm. That translates to about 46 inches or 69 scale feet. The actual length of a CH-53 is 67.5 feet, so this is closer to scale than i thought. About 1/17.5 scale.
The kit is basically a vacuform kit with balsa framework. So it would take some effort to build. Probably a lot of the framwork could be left out, if the plastic is stiff enough, if you aren't planning on flying it. No rotors or rotor hub comes with the kit.
Cost is about $200 shipped, at current exchange rates. So with some effort one could have a very close to 1/18 scale CH/HH-53.
Here is a pdf of the building instructions, it does not come with the mechanical helicopter components, just the fuselage and interior framework:
http://docu-and-info.de/manuals/docu_pd ... 600_de.pdf

Re: RC Plane Talk
oh yeah, and i forgot about this other Osprey:
http://www.ready2fly.ch/shop/USER_ARTIK ... aad8ca7063
The one i mentioned in my post above is now for sale, but costs a fortune. The fuselage alone is $399. No wings, rotors tailplane etc. The whole flying unit is $1600 but it does fly like the real thing.
The Ready2Fly Osprey is still pretty expensive but for $300 or so you get the whole thing. It doesn't hover but the nacelles do tilt somewhat and it flies straight and level of course. There is no airframe only kit of this.

Re: RC Plane Talk
Thanks again aferg. The Stallion looks pretty good. I guess I did not realize how much work there would be though. Also, I realize the materials making up some of these, but some of these R/C aircraft look way off from the real thing.
Are you aware of a Sea King that is about accurate in size?
Thanks

Re: RC Plane Talk
there are 2 sea kings, both about 1/16.5 to 1/17 scale.
This one is a vacuform fuselage and is inexpensive:
http://shop-rc.causemann.de/Sikorsky-H3 ... -fuer400er
then there is the smartmodel fibreglass and finished one, much more expensive:
http://www.smartmodel.com.hk/products/p ... hird_id=95
I think the cheaper one is better size wise being a bit smaller, but you should check into it and it's more work for sure but the price is pretty friendly.

Re: RC Plane Talk
Not sure if i've mentioned this one before. A-6 Intruder, a bit on the small side though. 29 1/2 inches long, so about 1/22. Nice looking model though. Would look a bit bigger than the xd stuka.
http://rc-castle.com/shop/product_info. ... cts_id=955
and there's this one, which is nearly exactly 1/18 but looks a bit cartoonish, especially around the canopy area. It's not as misproportioned as it looks in the pic. The main problem is the canopy is narrow and the wing is shoulder mounted instead of mid fuselage. Otherwise, it's really not bad.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Grumman-A6-Intruder ... l_Vehicles
This link has some all around pics of it, just click on the little picture and it will enlarge with all round views. As i said, it's not bad except for the bizarre shaped canopy.

Re: RC Plane Talk
Ok im needing a RC remote and a decent but inexpensive lipo charger.
I was going to get the Spektrum DX7 and for the charger not sure....
I was looking at a Thunder Ac6 for about $55... Looks like it has the most bang for the buck.
What do you guys think?

Re: RC Plane Talk
Another B-17 coming. This one looks to be pretty close to 1/18; probably a tad small if anything. Priice probably $200-ish. Just a prototype shown, hopefully better paint scheme to follow.
It's a foam plane, so solid interior. Clear nose and turrets but looks like the cockpit windows are just decals. Chin turret which is nice. Overall good lines.
Anyone interested can follow this thread. The guy holding the plane is 5' 6" tall.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1334008
Edit: wingspan reported as 64 inches, which puts it at 1/19.4 scale.

It looks like the cockpitwindows are plastic. If you look at this picture - you can see the sky through them
Re: RC Plane Talk
hm....not sure. Could just be reflected light off shiney grey decal windows.
Anyway, it's not a deal breaker for me one way or the other. This plane has very nice lines and unless it costs a lot, i'm going to get 2. They are coming out in 2 paint schemes; i presume one will be olive drab and the other silver.
