Well i did it...

Post by aferguson » Sun Jun 26, 2005 5:57 pm

I finally broke down and bought a Greatplanes DC-3. I've been eyeing them for about a year now and finally, out of frustration from lack of new product, i bought one on Ebay.

For those of you who are unfamilair what i'm talking about here's a link:

http://www.rcgroups.com/4505

It's a slightly misproportioned, slightly sub scale DC-3 r/c sport scale airplane. Its lines are good though and it is mostly built up. The fuselage works out to about 1/20.5 scale and the wings are about 1/19.5 scale, so it 'averages' out to about 1/20 scale...livable with i guess.

So i'm happy. My only problem now is deciding whether to make it into a D-Day C-47 with a bunch of Ruperts jumping from it or make it into a Vietnam era AC-47 Gunship....i've got the three mini guns. Of course i could also do a British C-47 version for my Dusty Trail British paras....

Aferguson, Nice Catch... I'm a WWII collector, I'd go with the C-47 D-day version. Post some pics when you can. ... just looking for a C-47 :D

Sweet plane bud! I would also suggest going with the D-Day theme :D

Good grab. I would choose the D-Day plane also.

Vietnam.

There's so much focus on the 'good' war within our hobby, it'd be good to give recognition where recognition is due.

(It is for this reason that I wish 21st would begin shifting focus away from WWII and bringing Korea and Vietnam to the forefront).

Spooky!
Check out the current Warbird Digest for a good write-up and pics on a nicely restored, and flying, Vietnam Spooky.

So, what did it set you back?

Since it's so close to scale, I might pick one up to do a Spooky myself...

i paid $112 for it. The cheapest i've seen it at online retailers is $150 and it usually goes for $110-$120 on Ebay. It comes with engines and electronic components (for flying) that i won't be using and i may try to sell them on ebay to recover some of my costs.

Given that this is the only even close to 1/18 scale C-47 around and possibly ever likely to be, i didn't feel that the price was too much to pay.

Whatever the choice it's gonna be impressive....
Scary thing is that the fuselage on the bird in question is about 16% TOO SMALL. It is sized for figures closer to 3 inches than 4....SO, when we ask for a C-47 let's keep in mind what we're talking about.....it would be about 1/6th BIGGER than the one Andrew scored, and as you can see that thing is BIG.
Great timing for the project with the new bbi paras though :P

My C-47 came today. It's quite nice. The dimensions are as quoted (i was secretly hoping it would be a bit bigger :) ). It's just a hair under 38 inches long, so a few inches under 1/18 scale. More like 1/20.5. Still looks pretty big, however, a little bit longer than the F-18 and much larger looking than the Apache (i'm talking about the fuselage). If you didn't know any better you'd think it was the right scale...the real C-47 is deceptively large.

The fuselage is 5 inches high at its highest point, which is most of the length of the fuselage except the taper towards the tail, so there is definitely sufficient room to put paratroopers inside it. I'll have to cut the door bigger than would be correct for the fuselage size, but that's minor and shouldn't be very noticable.

It's very light, which will make hanging a breeze. It will be lighter than the XD P-38.

Lines are good, parts are cleanly molded. Should go together pretty easily as it's mostly finished. Comes in a silver grey finish.

It's so nice in fact i think i will get another sometime. I plan to make this one a DDay version but i still want to do an AC-47 gunship...and of course a British Arnhem version would be pretty cool too...

Recommended for anyone who is not a stickler for exact scale..
