How do you clean them?

Post by INTREPER » Tue Jun 14, 2005 4:17 pm

Just a general question for any of the toy models. How do you clean them?

Solutions, materials, techniques, etc....

I find that letting the dust collect on them makes em look more authentic. 8)

I let the dust collect on the armor pieces - for reasons that luftpanzer stated - however, I occasionally used one of those cans of compressed air to clean out the finer details. As for the planes, I use a feather duster as it doesn't scratch. Canned air also works well for the planes!

A disadvantage of the canned air is you start going through it when you discover how cool it can make the props spin :D

I also like a very soft paintbrush to get dust off around the details.

Yep - canned air is the best for the planes and the more dust the merrier for the armor pieces. :D

Then you flip the can upside down and shoot out the propellant, freezing whatever it touches 8)

Ah the days of bb gun and bottle rocket wars.
Kind of like Conan's legend of steel. I just got real emotional with that memory. Nothing like shooting your best friend with a bb gun! :P

Using canned air to freeze things is the ONLY way to use them! :-D He he. For me, when I take down the hanging aircraft to take with me to the Planes of Fame Museum for display during the seminar, I usually just take a slightly wet paper towell and wipe down the entire top side of the aircraft or where it was most suseptible from the dust. Works very well!

Bottle Rocket wars do wonders to Golf courses hehe 8) Ahh to be 18 again. And shooting your cousin in the but with a BB gun is priceless.

I use a make up brush to dust my XD stuff off. It's really easy and gets all of the dust off. I have the first series tanks/troopers and display my 1st series Panther, Sherman, and metal grey Tiger I on bookshelves. My planes (8) are in a flight line next to my Crate stacks.

I've tried the wet paper towel thing but it turned the dust into mud. Not good.

The wife turned me onto the make up brush idea.

Swiffer Hand Dusters

Post by Just1more » Wed Jun 15, 2005 1:13 pm

Swiffer Hand Dusters work great, they're cheap and can be found I any Grocery Store. I use them on all my planes, shelves and vehicles that are starting to get too dusty :D

21C where's my Avenger?

the old fashioned way

1) Press lips firmy together
2) Exhale, forcing air from lungs through said lips
3) Profit

:-)

Edit:
Seriously though, I use compressed air via the bottled type or through my compressor (low psi) and use paint brushes to get in those hard to reach places, and use plenty of Q-tips.

I just take a damp cloth and wipe them down. I own a 1917 brick house and the dust levels are epic! Hell, I can't even tell what planes they are after a while!

Talking about bottle rocket wars. Me and my 3 brothers bought 12 grosses of them one year and made rocket launcher pistols. These were simply 1/4"copper tubing cut to about 10 inches nailed to a very crude wood handle. Worked like a charm! We ran around with like 5 or six in the gun at one time. When one fired, the rest did. What memories. You should of seen the carnage when it started to get dark! Screaming, smoke, flash pops, errant rockets. We kept the tradition going when we went paint-balling for my brother's batchelor party many years ago.....

Oh, and I nailed my brother with my Crossman M1 Carbine BB gun (that I still have!!) in the leg from over 100 yards away when I was about 10. Man did I get the crap kicked out of me by my dad after my brother told on me and showed him his welt, hehehehehehehe......
