BBI 1/18 scale P-40?

Post by demetrop » Fri Jun 03, 2005 7:47 am

Is it possible that BBI may produce a 1/18 P-40, since Toys-R-Us still has it listed on their website for some time now? If this were an error, it should have been corrected by now. Perhaps it could be a P-40E model?

Well, they have the 1st series German Officer listed too so......
But at this point anything new in 1/18 scale from bbi would be welcome :)

In my humble opinion I dont think we will see a 1/18th scale P-40 from BBI and why should we? I mean its already been done by 21st. Theres also been rumors of a Corsair coming from them too but I doubt will see that either and again why would we? Its been done already. I would hope they would do SOMETHING different like a Zero or a Hellcat but who knows. No telling where the future lies with BBI.

Right now I'm looking forward to the two BBI Mustang repaints and the Avenger in the fall.

Just bercause it's been done doesn't mean BBi won't try and do it better though. I mean... look at the Mustang of course. How about a P-40N Warhawk? Lots of different schemes that can be done. Ir maybe a Korean War F4U-7 Corsair with pods and rockets?

Yes, BBI could easily make a later model P-40E or P-40N, and make it much more detailed. The 21st Century one was an early B model.

confused

I think BBI is confused on exactly what path to take. Copying the tried and true path established by 21st or forging out on their own and making something original. I have, unfortunately, heard rumors of a P-47 (Yuck!)
Talk about a plane that has experienced overkill, sheez!

I would much rather see some other planes made that have not been done in 1:18 so far, instead of re dos like a P-47.

Don't forget that about 4 years ago, there was a photo of, I think, the Blackhawk helicopter at the Toy Fair. At the edge of the photo was the unmistakable tail of a P-47. Supposedly, the guys at the table wouldn't allow photos of it to be taken. So, there is at least some merit to a possible P-47. Now to find that picture......

I would keep my eye open for a possible 1:18 Zero yet from bbi.

I would love to see a F4U-4 or F4U-5NL. They are just about the slickest fighters made, IMHO!

The reference to a P-40 is almost certainly a typo, unfortunately....

Jackpot! Thanks for the find Toy! There it is..... I wonder where that thing is right now??

Where did the rumor of the bbi Corsair come from? I haven't heard of that one before this thread.

Boy you guys are sharp! I sure wouldn't have recognized that tail on the side of the pic as part of a P-47!

P-47

Post by digger » Sat Jun 04, 2005 9:13 am

I thought word was 21st "scooped" bbi on a P-47 because of a leak....could just be a rumor....the plane had to be done. But I wonder if bbi retooled it from a few years ago to bring it up to snuff with the P-51.
Cool scheme if it's this one:

Cool scheme, but do we really need another P-47 razorback - or even bubbletop? BBI would certainly offer an improved product, but 21c has certainly beat those planes to death as well as the Corsair.

Given that, however, perhaps thats why BBI has slowed up a bit with new WWII products... Perhaps, as the above posts note, there was a leak concerning the BBI P-47 and then a 21c scoop and they put out so many repaints in such a short time to totally trash BBI's efforts. Such a move may also explain the BBI Corsair rumors and why 21c recently released the Boyington and Kepford Corsairs in such quick succession. The BBI P-51 showed when it did as it didn't entail much competition from 21c's inferior version. The 21c Marines, Japanese figures, and BoB rereleases at Wal Mart may even be a preemptive action to deal with (or stall) the pending release of the BBI WWII figures, which 21c obviously knows about... As a larger company, BBI doesn't have as much to loose as little 21c does in this game.

This is all just pure sepculation, and I don't usually like posting such fodder, but then it is kind of fun to guess at what cut-throat schemes may be going on with 21c and BBI in the military toy arena 8)

21st trying to undermine BBI? It does make some sence dont it? I mean think about it, BBI comes out with a good looking Mustang and all of a sudden out comes 21st with their proto type re-tooled Mustang afterwords. Rumores flying of a BBI Corsair along with a P-47 then 21st comes out with the Kepford and Boyington Corsair repaints, then releases the P-47 Bubbletop line. It does indeed make some sence. But lets not get ahead of ourselves here guys because theirs enough room in the WW 2 1/18th scale plane buisness for both companies. BBI should stick to different releases and not follow 21st Century because if they do they are going to lose the battle. What BBI SHOULD do is make the sought after Zero and Hellcat and yes maybe an F4U-4 but dont follow up with more P-47s ect because they have been done before.

I say this to BBI: Finish up your exclusive Mustang repaints and move onto other WW 2 fighters like the Hellcat and Zero. We want them and there is the demand for them so why not just move on and make them? Do what 21st has yet to do, PLEASE!!!!!!

Personally, outside of 21st' recent plans to try to beat the quality of the BBI Mustang, I don't see 21st as being organized enough to do any of this other stuff (such as preempting a BBi P-47). If they were even slightly organized, they could have doubled their sales up to now.

It would seem that the Zero is to 1/18 guys as the Typhoon was to the 1/72 guys.. And anyone that collects 1/72 knows what happened when IXO released the Typhoon.. I would think either 21st or BBI would be very stupid NOT to release that plane..

Trust me.......the Typhoon would be extremely sought after in 1/18 as well. If i had to choose i'd pick the Typhoon hands down over a Zero Fortunately i won't have to choose and will get both.....if anybody ever has the brains to make them.

Confused

Post by OnWu » Wed Jun 08, 2005 6:32 pm

It boggles my mind when I think of some of the choices that are made in 1:18. There are still many, many subjects out there, why do the manufacturers copy what has already been done rather than stike a new path? BBI doing P-40s, F4Us, and P-47s? Why? I just don't get it.

As mentioned a gazzillion times, subjects like the:

Zero
Typhoon
Hellcat
SBD
P-51C
Me-110
Me-262

Make perfect sense, why rehash ground that has been thoroughly covered and the market exhausted?

Maybe the Fast-Food analogy is at work here. Ever notice that FF places are all in the same location, at each other's throat? Wouldn't it make more sense for KFC to be on one side of town and Burger King on the other? Nope, nevers happens, they are always right next to each other trying put one another out of business. Maybe that is the strategy at work here.

I second the notion of a Korean War Corsair. Would snatch that sucker up a second.

I'm growing tired of dreaming about what might be coming down the pike. I need to see some new plastic NOW.

Wasn't there a Korean era Corsair produced by 21st Century? The one with a yellow cowl?
Thanks,

Yes, but the 21c version is the F4U-1A and later models with some differences (like a 4-bladed prop, etc.) were used in Korea.

The Korean paint scheme is in the profile album. It is painted up as a F4U-5, so the use of the F4U-1 was a big stretch!!
