FOV dissing 1/18?

I noticed a FOV 1/24 scale RC Tiger and Sherman on ebay. Said they were new for 2009. If this has been discussed, I must have gone to the john and just missed it. In this economy, why would they come out with an all new scale (and at around $100 at that) instead of maybe improving on or making something new in an established scale such as 1/18? The 1/18 that FOV is producing is certainly not considered to be of high quality (which I am sure they are aware of) so it seems to me they are more or less abandoning the 1/18 niche as far as anything of good quality is concerned. It appears that FOV just doesn't believe there is a market in 1/18 for pieces as detailed as their 1/32 line. More than likely due to what it would have to be priced at. I wonder if they feel their high dollar 1/16 items are as far as they want to go with a high quality piece in a larger scale.

Maybe because the 1/24 RC tank hobby is also a fairly large niche?

Judging from the fact that more and more tank models are being released in this scale, with better electronics, capabilities, etc. I would say that the 1/24 tanks eclipse 1/18 armor in terms of popularity.

FOV is a company that's out to make a profit. They will not "diss" a scale if it turns a healthy profit for them.

They're a fairly smart company to actually grow and expand in all these years, so their plan to get in the RC 1/24 market is probably a good idea. :)

one of those 1/24 guys makes a T-55 or similiar, I was thinking hard about getting it...but I like to stay in scale, either 1/16 or 1/18.

Can't disagree with that. Of all scales, 1/18 is probably the least popular, most likely because of the limited selection and the room it takes up. I have considered going to 1/72 simply because of the unbelievable number of pieces available. RC is immensely popular in any scale. I was working near Daytion, Ohio once when there was a yearly national convention. Couldn't get a room within a hundred miles of there. Got kicked out of the motel I was in becasue everything is booked up a year ahead.

I would like to see one of the FOV RC's just to see the quality. But, if I'm going with a RC, I will probably stick with the 1/16.
