Lately it seems as if we don't have enough of these "nostalgia" or "what if" threads regarding 21c, the Ultiamte Soldier Xtreme Detail line, and all the fun and angst it generated over the years. However, to add more to the mix, I came across a little discovery in a roundabout way. I thought was worth posting

Presenting the unveiling of the Xtreme Detail line in early 2000:

These were from an article in Tomart's Action Figure Digest, which I found on this other Ultimate Soldier site here: http://www.ultimatesoldier.net/scrapbook.html. I'm sure a lot of you old timers and diehards remember those exuberant days back in 2000 8)

I didn't get in on the action until 2006,so I missed out on all the early hype.
Must have been really quite fun having these 1:18 models available for the first time.
I still remember my first 1:18.A P-38 D Day.It was huge. And i loved it.

How many of you guys were here at the birth of 1:18?

Bought my first Tomarts somewhere around 1997. Bought it for several years. Yep, bought every one of those items shown as soon as they were released. That was a terrible yellow on the nose and tail of the 109. Repainted it years later a brighter yellow. Took that first Panther out of storage about 2 weeks ago and freed it from the box.

Yes, I remember that exciting day when I first saw the 2 planes at TRU. I couldn't believe what I saw. I just had to have them. And the rest they say is history...

How I searched and searched for that RTO. I still wonder how that didn't make it into the mix.

i was in from the beginning as well. At the time i was collecting 6 inch figures and had lots of them, alot of fantasy stuff plus some others. I enjoyed it but was frustrated at the lack of military items (although i did have a 1/12 scale hawker typhoon, which was an r/c model).

In early october of 2000 i was in a 5km relay race (each person runs 5k over the course of a marathon). As luck would have it, my leg ended right beside a TRU. I went in and saw the xd stuff, again; i'd seen it a couple of times before but felt the figures were too small, so didn't get any.

I took the subway back to my car and by the time i got there had decided to drive back to the TRU and pick up the panther. Which i did.

And the rest is history.....well, my history...

:)

I first found out about XD in late 2000 while stationed over in the UK. I saw the photos of the ME-109 and P-51 on-line along with the Sherman and Tiger. I wanted them SO bad, but I had to wait until I PCSed back to the states in 2001 to get my first taste of 1:18 goodness. I actually ordered both planes on-line as the TRU here ran out. Then, wave 2 came out and all hell broke loose. Repeated trips to TRU in search of the P-38 and Corsair commenced! It was all downill from there.

I was there at TRU from day one. Of course I was buying 1:6 Stuart Tank and Patton Jeep, and GI Joes, things of that nature.

I didn't buy any XD till I saw the planes. Then I started on the armor a little while later. The rest is Xtream buying history.

Tman, thanks for the memories. What an exciting time that was. XD, and the hunt for XD from TRU / 21st fan club, to W-M to TRU, has provided me with a great distraction from life's realities over all these years. I miss that.

oh i can remember getting my first two figures, the us officer and german rifleman right when they came out....only $4.99 each if i remember right, before they began uping the prices as time went on. that panther as a birthday gift for only like $30. memories, memories.

on that topic, seen a bunch of the 1st edition figures on ebay for only 5.99 plus some shipping....seemed kinda low for those originals

Well I have a bit of a different story.
I got in to see prices sky high, items hard to find-anywhere, and not a very wide selection. This is because I only got into 1:18 military in May 2009. The only thing 1:18 I see at stores is the grey PAK 40. And some figures, though not 21st Century.
I was too young to remember if I saw Stukas or Mustangs and TRU or Wal-Mart. That would be really cool to be able to just walk in and pick up a 1:18 plane for like $50.
I have about 60 1:18 cars. My first military vehicle was the 1:18 Motorworks/Ultimate/21st Grey Tiger. My second was the 1:18 Ultimate Soldier Me-262 Yellow 7. I got a few figures to add to my Tiger, and that's all I have so far.
Thanks

For a while they were $40, and everywhere. Great example of you don't know what you got until..

yeap, you guys must of had a ball back in the day! I've actually had a couple of vivid dreams where i've gone into a store to find tons of XD stuff (actual xd stuff and imagined stuff ie harrier). I'm kinda glad i was in when I was though. I remember when the xd spitfires where on the edge of becoming hard to find.

Yep, those were the good ole days. I still remember seeing that Lou IV and thinking how I just yearned for something like that when I was a kid. Of course I just had to have it. Then I just had to have the Messerschmidt, then the Panther, the Kubelwagen and the rest, they say, is history.

Enjoy
