Glue removal from clear plastic

Post by Rogo » Wed Oct 27, 2004 9:34 am

The windscreen side panel of my black chevron FW190 has a blotch of dried glue on the inside.
I was worried about trying to scrape it with an exacto and making it worse.
Is there some way to remove the dried glue from the clear plastic or is this now a permanent 'feature' on my plane?

Thanks for any help,
Rogo

I separated the two halves of one of my Black Hawks and the drive sprockets of my M-48 by placing them in boiling water. The sprockets were easy I let them boil until I could smell the glue, it only took a few seconds. The Black Hawk was much more work due to the large amount of glue used in the nose. If I am not mistaken this slightly discolored the clear plastic, and too much heat can warp the plastic. The discoloration didn't bother me. The Black Hawk will be getting a re-paint and weathering, dirty wind shield and all.

I also use mineral spirits to remove sticker adhesive. Maybe a small amount on a Q-tip applied around the glue may soften it enough to remove it.

Just some thoughts.

I think a small amount of mineral spirits on a Q-Tip might do the trick, but be really careful!

PS A friend of mine says nail polish remover might work, but I've never tried this myself and have no idea if this would work or make things worse.
