More like the 26th thread about the F-14................

please JSI make this plane because there will be rivers of tears shed by these grown men on this board if it (most likely) never comes out.

Me I think its a waste of good plastic, looks over scale and would be a pain in the a$$ to store or display. I will wait till something like the Skyraider, A-10, or F-4 come out.

With the price of the Tomcat creeping into the $230 range now, i'm starting to wonder how well these things are going to do. Shipping is going to be enourmous, so you're lookng at close to $300, shipped.

Not sure how many people are going to be willing to pay that. Some will of course, but will enough?

Factor in that you'll then have to buy pilots on top of that and maybe the ordnace you want.

For the F-15 and Su-27 the other consideration is going to be the less popular paint scheme choices. I'm sure not going to be willing to pay $300 for a 2 seat chinese trainer or even an Israeli strike eagle. I suspect i'm not alone.

I know these may well be intended for a more global market but i suspect the lion's share of the sales will still come from the US. More classical paint schemes would certainly stand a better chance. A soviet SINGLE seat Su-27 and USAF strike eagle. Not sure how many chinese people are going to be willing to shell out $300 for a trainer version of the su-27.

AFERGUSON:

Badcat suggested the JSI F-14 price might be $250, so with an optional duo pack of pilots and/or payload plus shipping, the total price could easily exceed $300.
If a lot of collectors continue to say price, optional pilots and optional payload don't matter, then the JSI dealers who monitor these posts will relay that back to JSI---i.e. JSI can charge almost any price because there are collectors who will pay anything. That's great for collectors who have deep pockets, but in this economy, many collectors have been affected and a $300 plus model is too much. This may set a precedent for maybe a JSI USAF F-15E with a delivered price of $350, etc., etc. That's approaching the FOV limited edition, diecast 1/16 Tiger price range. That's approaching absurd.

It is alot but I had preordered it for 300 clams when we first heard about the 14 way back when, so even if it tips 4 bills, Im still gonna get it(not that I got it like that). How much does a skyworks cost?? way more than an F14!!!

JSI could possibly sell a lot more $200 1/18 jets than $300 jets---and make more profits in volume sales.

comparing skyworks to what JSI is attempting is not a good comparison. Skyworks are very limited edition models. Only a small handful of each type will ever be purchased. JSI is looking at volume sales in the low thousands, i would guess.

I remember when the BBI F-18 first came out. At TRU they were $80 or so iirc. They sold, but sales were not brisk and certainly not brisk enough to motivate bbi to follow it up with a whole slew of other 1/18 jets.

So, if an $80 F-18 did, so-so, how well is a $300 Tomcat with no pilots going to do? Granted they won't need to sell as many, probably 1/3 or even 1/4 what the F-18 needed to sell, but still. How many diehard collectors are going to be willing to fork over that kind of cash?

I want to see JSI succeed as much as the next person, but i have many misgivings. I wish they'd get into a big box retailer so prices could be halved and exposure greatly increased. As long as these are only going to be sold on the internet i think they may flounder.

There's also the display aspect to consider. The F-14 will probably weigh twice what the F-18 weighs and that's a lot. It will be a bit of an engineering project to hang it and displaying it on it's u/c will be tough due to it's enormous size. Many people had trouble displaying their avengers and could only do so with wings folded....a tomcat or su-27 is a much larger proposition. So, hanging is going to be the best option, but as i said, the weight is a concern.

I've read that there were won't be as many operating features on the F-14 compared to other 1/18 scale jets. Perhaps if the model could be designed without any operatng features that could drop production costs and the retail price for the plane. I agree that with such a high price tag, it would not appeal to the average toy buyer.

1:18 Modern Jets

Hello,
Due to their huge footprint on store shelves and high price point, I seriously doubt there are any big box retailers willing to handle this item, particularly in a weak economic climate. If it does carry an SRP between $250-$300, then the average buyer is going to see it for what it is - a potential dust collector that they're going to have to mark down to sell off. Witness the WWII planes/MiGs Walmart had to reduce in price just to get rid of them. No retailer wants to be put in a similar situation.

Frankly, JSI needs a catalog house capable of pushing out several hundred pieces for the SRP to come down to more affordable levels. Even a site like Military.com would have trouble moving large quantities in today's market. And, a Shanyang would sell even slower if its aimed solely at the US market.

I wish them luck with the larger sized aircraft cause there's many hurdles standing in their way to achieving success.

I was not comparing the models, I am comparing prices. A toy plane is a toy plane no matter who makes it or how much anyone wants to shine it. I dont really care if JSI makes it in the world, all I want is an F14 and I am willing to pay for it. Look how much people are paying for the 16 and 18's nowadays. I think it's pretty silly to try to forecast what these companies will do and how well they will do it. People walked by the 18's on the shelves and a few years later, the same people are paying extravagant amounts of money for these models. The same will happen with the new birds except that I will have one as soon as they come out and if the company folds and they sell them all for fifty bucks then I will buy more at a reduced price and not even think about how much the original cost me.
