21c's Masterpiece Aircraft?

Post by Tinman » Sat May 02, 2009 10:12 am

With the demise of 21st Century Toys, what do you think was their best aircraft, their masterpiece? No lists, please - just your top pick.

Considering fit, finish, paint, assembly, size and wow factor (and ignoring historical importance), I say the German 104. If I could display one 21C AC, it would be this one. Amazing work.

A masterpiece from 21st Century? Well let' see. I would have to go with my ME262 Nightfighter.
Fred, really looking forward to the JSI 1/18th scale Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

For pure wow factor, it will have to be the Avenger. The amount of working parts, the turret, size, flight controls just has me going wow everytime I look at it. Sure, there were QA issues, but still, for $39.99, it was the biggest bang for the XD buck you will ever see.

p.s. My favorite 1:18 aircraft of all time: The BBI Corsair.

I'm gonna agree with Teamski on all counts. At one point or another I've owned at least one of every plane type that 21st produced excepting the Super Cobra. And while both of my Starfighters would run a close second, my Atlantic Avenger is the absolute coolest thing from 21st I've ever bought.

The BBI Corsair, however, is the best looking and most impressive 1/18 plane I own from any manufacturer.

(Because I can't afford anything from HPH!)

Good call.

Me-262A by a longshot (although I love my Atlantic TBF).

The pilot sculpt with oxygen mask, cockpit instrument panel/interior with seatbelts, opening gun bays on both sides, and overall level of detail gets my vote. My model's paint, fit and finish is flawless.

Every time I look at the monster on my man-room floor, my jaw seems to drop. To me, it's the coolest darned thing to have a Schwalbe, that size, sitting in my room.

Though the BBI Corsair is my all time favorite 1/18 plane, as for 21st Century Toys, based on a combination of details, accuracy, and features I would say their "masterpiece" was the Avenger.

It's not my favorite 21st 1/18 plane, mostly because I think the Avenger is one UGLY plane, but it is the best detailed and most appropriately scale built out there. The F-86 Huff is my favorite 21st plane but it wasn't their masterpiece.

For me so far only from what I own it would be the BH Avenger.

Tough question :wink:

I would go with the S1 USAF F-104.

It just looks so right with its flashy-but-not-overdone markings, plus it has the size factor and a lot of detail and moving parts 8)

* * *

While I know we only could choose one, my second choice would be the Bf-109G in the "Gunther Rall" scheme and third, the "Bunker Hill" Avenger.

I also agree with Teamski that the S1 BBI Corsair "Marines Dream" is probably one of the best 1:18 planes of all time :wink:

* * *

The Avenger was the pinnacle of 21c engineering, but it suffered from QC issues and had those sagging wings, which lowered it on my list as their truly greatest plane. In some respects it was almost as though 21c was pushing the envelope with the Avenger and wasn't quite sure how to address some of the problems with mass producing a complex model of that size. For one, the wing hinge could have been better designed to be stiffer and more robust, even if it mean a loss of a little accuracy,l and the planes should have been packaged better...

No question ... the Avenger. I never get tired looking at it with all the detail that it has.

This may suprise a few, but I think the best was the Bf-109. It's what started it all and still looks really great next to any other. Favorite scheme would have to be the Galland. G-6 was nice too, but it had its QC problems.

My all time favorite would have to be the UH-1C Huey though, but I'm a sucker for whirly-birds :lol:.

I would have to make my fav the Bunker Hill Avenger.

All of the last releases had great detail.. The Avenger, 109G6, and all the jets had some neat features. I was really looking forward to see what would come out next.......

As time goes by all of the companies have been and for the most part are stepping up the level of detail and it seems that each release is a little better than the previous.

* I don't think there's any Masterpiece AC unless 21st. had done the B-25 . That's my bit.

.............. although I like all the AC in my collection , the 262's & Haleakala II are my favorites I guess.

The Avenger never did it for me. It is cool and all but I would not put it at the top.

It is OK to start throwing stones. It has not been the first time. :?
