Small Scale Military Headquarters

There are a lot of Commonwealth guys out there . If it were to be made what would be your favorite tank if it could be had in 1/18 scale ?

This may never happen I would just like to see if there is a feel for a British tank.

BTW the Firefly will be done. I just put it on the list because it should be on the list. It was the Allies most powerful tankbuster . Or would that be the Achellies ?

I voted Cromwell but really wanted a Crusader...

Hard choice, but I'd have to go with the Matilda, particularly the later variants like what the FOV 1:32 scale tank replicates so well.

You also left off the Grant. Yes it was basically the US M-3, but the Brits modified the turret and the Grant was famously used by Gen. Montgomery in North Africa.

Matilda for me. Because of the book "Tramp in armor" I was given as a kid by grandfather.

The time is that fateful spring of 1940 when the Panzers rolled across Northern France with nothing to stop them. Stranded behind the German lines, a solitary Matilda tank and its crew smash and manoeuvre their way towards Dunkirk.

I voted the Cromwell over the Comet. Tough decision as I like them both. The Comet , which came out fairly late in the war, was the UK best all round tank good armour and the 77mm gun fired a cut down version of the 17lb. I just happen to like the looks of the Cromwell.

I consider the Grant/Lee to be an American tank. Yes the Brit version had its own turret . I will do another American tank and I think that this could be the next. but there are a lot of guys out there who want the Stuart. The Lee/ Grant would be easier.


It looks like the Firely is getting to the top of the list. This is a custom that I will do. I wanted to do it with the M-10.

When I do the Firefly I will make the turret , bow gun cover and partial deck to make it a M4A4 or what ever the demonination. I had a deal going to anyone who gave me a Firefly kit would get a custom kit for even trade . But no one jumped on it. So this custom will have to wait.

Well, consider the Firefly as an American tank as well, it just has a modified turret to allow the gun configuration, no different than the Grant with a modified turret.

I am not sure. I think the 21st has the double hatches that will help things out with the build. So maybe I will use that one. The Firefly used the M4A4 I think and some other collectors have said that I should do at least a partial rear deck to make it right. So when I get a Firefly kit I will check things out and do what I have to do.

So hopefully when done you can use it on either chassy.

it would be better to use the FOV sherman as it is easier to find and has a proper hole for the turret whereas 21c's sherman turret is screwed on.

The 21st turret is the more correct version though for a Firefly. It has the low rear bustle on the back of the turret where the FOV has the higher bustle of the later turret. Doesn't sound like much of differencebut it kind of is. Also The VC Firefly used the M4A4 hull and it is actually a stretched out hull. You would need more then just an upper deck for the FOV Sherman. There was a Firefly based on the M4 , the same as the 21st Century Sherman. It was the IC Firefly. It is the same as the 1/32 scale one that 21st made. A member of this forum made one some time ago and posted information on it.

The Matilda for sure. I'd gleefully spend money I shouldn't to get my hands on a 1/18 North Africa Matilda.

Gee... if you guys would just get over your " compensating for something" obsession with large scale you could be happy like us 1/32 scale guys, and already own Matildas, Fireflies, Lee's, Grant's etc

I already have the 1/32 Matilda. While quite nice, it doesn't completely satisfy.

Same here. The "Queen of the Desert" should be in a larger scale ... like 1/16th.
