Small Scale Military Headquarters

Just wondering if official markings were ever announced. I know it is a "battle of midway" aircraft but not sure if any more details were ever released...like squadron or what ship it was from.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing this puppy sooner rather than later.

I don't think that level of detail has ever been announced about the plane. And I don't know if the plane displayed on the MTS website is the 100% finalized paint scheme, either...

Is there a link to a pre-order anywhere or additional info?

I remember way, way back that the markings were after a particular SBD that participated in the battle of the coral sea(hence the included conversion decals remember!) as well as Midway. The aircraft later was used for training missions around lake Michigan... where it crashed. It was later salvaged and is currently on display. Does anyone remember which museum?

Isn't the one recovered from Lake Michigan hanging in Midway Airport in Chicago? I have walked under it a hundred times.

Don't know which squadron AT will do. I just hope it's a Midway SBD.

There is one surviving SBD from the actual Battle of Midway in Pensacola at the Naval museum.

Forgive a ground pounder if he doesn't know common plane stuff, but doesn't the MTS site say "Coral Sea" markings? or am I reading wrong? or does the SBD come with both Midway and Coral Sea markings?

I feel there will be a new aircraft to fight for space in my toy room. This dive bomber looks good.....

MTS does call it the "Midway Dauntless" now however. I don't think they were that specific before though.

Originally, the SBD was advertised as being in Midway markings with decals included to convert it to Battle of coral sea markings! Hopefully that pans out.

Been so long I can even let myself think that it may actually come out. I've given up but it would be fantastic if its true.

IIRC you would only have to add the red dots to the roundels for Coral Sea SBD-2.

Actually, if Admiral Toys were to do this Midway SBD correctly there would be faint remnants of the striped tail visible under the repainted tail. Take a look at this authentic only surviving SBD from The Battle of Midway http://jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6215207&nseq=3

Also there would be a faint red dot in the middle of the star. More like pink.
The white doesn't show up as bad, but my experience with painting cars and other things is that red and other bright colors will bleed through everytime unless a "bleeder seal" primer coat is put on first.
This will happen with modern paints as well even today. Painting over red with white without a primer coat is a no-no. No matter how many coats of white you put on, the red will seep through.

Looks like when this SBD was restored they managed to cover the red dot completely, but authentically left the faint tail section stripes as you would expect from the Navy repainting these in the field.

So yeah, we should get a Coral Sea version, repainted in the field (or on the Carrier) to a Midway SBD to be absolutely authentic.
I wonder if Jason knows this?

OK...Ok....a little history is in order.
The Admiral Toys SBD-2 is a replica of BuNo#2106. 2106 was assigned to the "Lex" prior to WW2 and took part in the gulf coast war games prior to Pearl Harbor. During those games, 2106 operated from dirt airstrips and ingested alot of stuff into the engine, causing excessive oil consumption and an engine rebuild. So when the "Lex" headed for the Pacific, 2106 was dropped off at Ford Island (Pearl) for an engine swap. 2106 was there when the attack came and survived with little or no damage. When 2106 rejoined the fleet after Pearl Harbor, she was fighting ready and took part in the Midway campaigne (2106 did not participate in Coral Sea). Since Midway happened AFTER May '42, the red center and red/white stripes on the tail were painted over and were not carried anymore. The "6" on the side stood for B-6 (the "B" was painted over too) while she flew with VMSB-241 off of Midway Island. During Midway, 2106 was damaged severely and rebuild (again). After Midway, newer SBD-5's were coming out and 2106, instead of rejoining the fleet, went to Michigan where it wore code B-7 on each side and used for training new pilots in carrier landings on the Great Lakes. A Ljg Donald Douglas (no relashionship to the manufacturer) got low and slow and crashed 2106 into the Lake Michigan where she sank. Douglas was rescued. In 1996, 2106 was found where she sank and raised. Being the only survivor know to exist of Pearl Harbor, Midway, and Coral Sea (era), 2106 was rebuilt for static display and is currently on display at the Pensacola Air Station Naval Air Museum....and she looks good. Soooo.......be still you wavering history buffs....Admiral Toys is doing a fantastic job bring one of the most historic wartime aircraft to life. The markings are correct......

Did you notice the section of original paint left on top of the fuselage rear?

Being Pearl & Coral Sea era she had red wing and fuselage dots at one time, and it's the tail's blue over the stripes that is faded or transparent (looking)

If I ever go to Florida again (used to live in Lake Worth) This will be one of my main stops in Pensacola.
