The P-51D "Killer" is made by BBI and is one of the best 1:18 WWII planes out at the moment.
As for the best XD plane, I am tied between the BF-109G and the Spitfire. The detail and accuracy on both is incredible, there's no over-sized cockpits and thick wings, and 21c Master Modeler Roy Sutherland has said these are his favorites.
You may want to wait a month or two, however, as the F-104 and TBM Avenger are coming out and these will blow the previous releases out of the water (especially the Avenger)!!
While all the 21c XD planes are excellent products, a few others such as the FW-190D9, the Corsair, Stuka, and P-38 are also very well done.

If you're willing to pay for the Eurostar, a ferry, or perhaps one of those cheap Ryanair flights, you can take a trip across the channel to the UK. I was there about 10 days ago and found a decent selection of XD planes for £29.99 (about $54) each at the giftshop in the RAF Museum at Hendon, just north of London. They are sold under licence by Corgi and the assortment consisted of Spitfires (both the DWK and NKK types), the RAF P-40, the yellow-nose Stuka, and the Galland ME-109E:
Otherwise... the cheap deals on ebay or a purchase from a US online retailer are your best bet. One last thought - isn't there a boardmember (Dirk??) who sells XD products in Germany? He may be able to hook you up!

I have to say that next to the BBI Mustang that the re-done Ira Kepford F4U is the best of them all. Roy Sutherland did an excellent job at up grading it and next to my BBI Mustang its my favorite. Of course VF-17 just happens to be on of my favorite fighter squadrons of WW 2. BBI's Mustang is still the top of them all however until 21st releases their Avenger or their much talked about re-tooled P-51.
The best plane that I have seen thus far from 21st is the new Avenger. I am certain that when it releases it will be one of the most exciting planes ever. Also as an added bonus I must point out that it will be sold at the same price as all the other aircraft! It's going to be the biggest plane for the buck.... I know its been a long time coming but when you see it you will all agree it was worth the wait and the hype!

Well I'm waiting for the Avenger thats for sure. It was always a favorite of mine and its a great memorial to the Squadrons that flew them at Midway and lost their lives when they had no fighter cover. Next to the Hellcat the Avenger was another one of Grummans excellent planes of WW 2. I cant wait until its released.

FAVORITE XD BIRD
I'll go with the first edition "Richthofen" Emil 109
OK, now that I'm back from my week-long exercise down in Georgia sucking rubber while launching planes, I would have to say the Avenger without a doubt. You guys have to see it in person!

I can't comment on the newest ME-109s (since they don't exist in Alabama), but my order of priority would be:
1. Corsair
2. P-38
3. Stuka
4. Spitfire
5. Best of the rest (P-47)
By the way, finally found a BBI P-51 Mustang in Alabama and it's everything it was hyped to be. Definitely the best yet, at least until the Avenger comes out.
