Avenger - which paint scheme to get?

Post by Tinman » Tue Jan 27, 2009 4:02 pm

For a variety of reasons I never got one, but now I'm seriously considering it. Any thoughts on the best paint scheme? I've only see the Atlantic version in person.

Which scheme looks the best on this aircraft? Which is the most historically significant?

I would go for the Atlantic version...they saw a lot of action against the U-boats.

The Bunker Hill looks good next to the BH Corsair. Then you can get the BH Hellcat from Airstrike. Just my $.02

Thank you, both! Any votes for the Lost Squadron version?

I have the Atlantic version and it looks really good. If I could get one now I'd probably get the Bunker Hill version (if that is the one with the two colors of blue) because is seems to be so rare compared to the other versions (maybe more collectible?). If it is then you will also pay more for it now as well. The only ones I've seen are on Ebay from somewhere in Hong Kong and they are much more than either the Atlantic or Lost Sqdrn versions.

In order:

1. Bunker Hill
2. Atlantic
3. Lost Squadron

But no matter which one you get, you'll love the size and details. I do like the Atlantic version because most people don't normally think of the Atlantic arena, usually just Pacific.

There's always been something about doing the Lost Squadron scheme that bothered me. The whole Bermuda Triangle, home front, unsolved disappearance angle. I don't know. Anyway.........don't forget that you get the alien figure with the Lost Squadron!

I agree I've always disliked that scheme, and the faux mystery behind it. In my opinion the flight was lost due to poor airmanship and not UFO's.

Tinman, I'd vote for any Avenger paint scheme you can get at a good price.
For me I'd go with the Atlantic scheme 'cause I live on L.I. and during WWII we had U-Boats off the coast and at one time 4 unwanted guests. and I know what happened to them.

The one Avenger I wanted was the first one...not for me but my Father in law. He flew in the Pacific during the war in an Avenger.
The 1:18th Model came out a few month after he passed away. I've seen it a few times online but..............it wasn't in time.

I like the Atlantic also, just make sure it has the screw covers.

All the Avenger paint schemes are good and I do have one of each. If I had to choose a favorite, however, I would go with the "Bunker Hill" plane. The Avenger will always be most-associated with the Pacific Theater (not to understate their role hunting U-Boats in the Atlantic) and the "Bunker Hill" scheme captures the look of a PTO Avenger perfectly 8)

I have the Atlantic, and I'm a 1/32 guy.

I don't have the screw hole covers though. :(

Can you still find Avengers from online retailers?

Target was selling them (Lost Squadron) thru Amazon for $79 with free shipping before Christmas (when I bought one). Now I see the shipping is no longer free. BatCat also has them for $79.

I really wanted a Bunker Hill but they are impossible to find for under $100. Atlantics are almost as bad, usually $89. It seems to me they sent at least half the Bunker Hill schemes to England, while they sent all the Atlantic schemes to the U.S. No wonder 21st is belly up.

It's all personal preference. If you want one to match a Hellcat and Corsair, then the Lost Squadron is the best second choice behind the BH. If not, then the Atlantic scheme may be the sharpest of all. They ARE a beautiful bird, though. Too bad 21st screwed up the marketing.

I see that 3000toys.com has Lost Squadron for $70.95 plus $7.95 flat rate shipping.

Seems like you can only find the Lost Squadron ones, does anyone still sell the Atlantic ones?

The prop is really a weak spot on the Avenger model. The blade can come lose in the prop hub, and it is a mess to fix. I think part of the problem is the way the plane is packed, the prop can take a beating.

That scares me about the prop! I don't want to pay a bunch of money and have it arrive broken. I probably wouldn't be able to fix it.

Tough decision! Took a chance on the seller in China on ebay, for the Bunker Hill version.

I had the same problem with the BH Avenger I got. No sooner had I removed the fuselage from the package than the prop fell off! It was a clean break and so was easy to fix with some superglue.

I agree with Saberfan that the way the Avenger is packaged leads to many of its QC issues from paint scratches to messed up wings to broken parts. The plane was too heavy and delicate to be packaged in the standard window box in the manner that it was. A solid box like that of the P-38 would have been much better. Failing that, even screwing the fuselage to a strong plastic tray (like the early 21c planes were) would have alleviated many of the QC issues...
