Does the XD world need a 1/18 scale Mig-17 ?

Post by pickelhaube » Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:51 pm

I was talking to Bird Dog the other day. He is really into Russian stuff. He is a fan of the Mig-17. The 17 has a lot of history in the Viet Nam conflict. It was the first Mig to draw and shed blood in that conflict. Plus it has some real cool como schemes.

It would not be that difficult to customize a Mig-15 into a Mig-17 ( famous last words ).

the mig 15 could be fairly easily made into a mig 17, i've considered doing it myself, with a smidgen of forgiveness. Whether it will be a big seller or not....that's another question.

I think it would be a cool plane to have. It was used in the Vietnam conflict as well as by many other countries.

Also, it would look good sitting next to the Skyraider and if we're lucky someday the F-4. Both of which had confrontations with the Mig 17... :D

I have a lot on my plate right now. But if there is anybody who would really want a Mig-17 either in kit form or turn key speak up. I think that this would be a cool project.

I'd be up for at least one in kit or turn key if you went through with the project.

I have a question...those of you that are voting for a Mig 21 are you completely not interested in a Mig 17?

In other words, if you only had the choice of yes or no, what would you answer?

The Mig 15 and 17 are very similar. For me, I would prefer something completely new and different.... like the Mig 21.

Ditto for me....I'd much rather get the -21. The MiG-17 was interesting enough, but way too similar to the MiG-15.

If you would rather see a Mig 21 done instead, are you willing to pay the high price a custom Mig 21 from scratch would cost? From what I've seen in posts here on the forum, it's easy to assume that not many would pay the price a custom 1/18 Mig 21 with the detail level most expect would run. Besides, 21st has already laid claim to producing the Mig 21. If it will become a reality is anyone's guess.

Pickelhaube has indicated that the Mig 17 would not be a difficult kit to do which means a more price friendly custom. It would be a new jet aircraft and although the Mig 17 and the Mig 15 do look similar, when you actually put them side by side, you can see what sets them apart.

Scuttlebutt says Bbi has a full-up proto of the Hind, in addition to the baby version they released through Target.

I know. They may have made the prototype but I think that is it.
That Hind would be huge. Probably the biggest 1/18 scale aircaft to date.

they definitely had a 1/18 Hind.....was supposed to be released in 2004, then it was delayed til 2007 and now i don't know if it will ever happen.

They also definitely had a 1/18 A-10. I saw pics of it. Gorgeous. It was offered to TRU last year but they didn't want it because they were committed to the Power Team A-10 and didnt feel they needed two. So it didn't get produced because there was no major retailer to back it.

So, it sits...

sadly they were lost when Yahoo dropped their picture hosting service. But i assure you i saw them and it looked amazing. Tons of ordnance, 3 colour scheme with sharkmouth. I was stupified when i heard why it wasn't going to be produced..

But there is clearly still hope that it will be picked up one day.

For now, i have a bead on what may turn out to be a 1/20 scale Hind fuselage. It's for r/c helicopters but looks quite good. I'm trying to get a confirmation on the dimensions. It's at least 30 inches long and may be 33 or 34.....if so it's about 1/20 scale and may be worth consideration. It's just a fuselage and canopies......no rotor or ordnance but still those shouldnt be too hard to fabricate.
