Does the world need a Japanese Mini sub in 1/18 scale ?

I have done planes armor and weapons. i have yet to do any maritime stuff.

A conning tower would be a great 1/18th scale display. Not too large and many configurations.....imagine an I-400 conning tower. Now that would be a monster!!!

Hell I'd consider a conning tower... German though, not Japanese. I'd love some Kriegsmarines to go with it. *sigh*

yeah i was thinking that japanese mini subs were mini and thought i'd make one a few years ago. I did some research and found out they werent so mini after all. 'mini' is a relative term, i guess.

A uboat conning tower would be great, depending on price of course. It might be a bit bulky and hence expensive in terms of resin, however. Maybe make it 1/20 scale instead? It would be a minor change visually but save about 30% on resin.

Yeah it's in Guam, even says so in the title. Been all through that exact one before it got welded shut, stationed there 86-89 at the NAVMAG. Still had some of the instruments and alot of valves intact, got some great photo's. Actually 1/18 Mato is right on 52" long. I have plans done up in 1/18, quite impressive.

"Blasphemer " Yes it must be 1:18th. As for the Japanese mini, I don't need one but that's no reason not not to make one.
I like the idea of a German U-boat conning tower. To keep costs down you could use hydrocal or hydrostone in a two piece RTV slush mold.
Hydrocal/stone is a type of plaster with an additive making it far stronger then plaster which allows you to cast things thinner than regular plaster. It picks the smallest of details and any fine details could be done in resin and then added on. Something to think about.

1/20 would be fine.......you wouldn't even notice the difference i bet and it would be cheaper to make and cheaper to buy...

That conning tower looks to be a lot of work as well. Somebody makes a 1/35 kit. It has the tower and gun platform. It does look cool and it would be big. Not knowing the exact measure ments I would put it at about 10 inches tall at the main tower another 6-8 inches for the perascopes and about 16-20 inches wide with the gun battery hand rail.

Here is one in 1/32 scale kind of pricey @315 pounds thats about $650.

that's by Andrea miniatures. They make a whole uboat in 1/32 scale as well. Spectacular to look at and in price as well.
