The future for 1/18?...alternative to plastics: liquid wood

Post by Yoxford » Tue Dec 23, 2008 1:14 pm

Just in time for Christmas, German researchers (Ach der lieber! always the Germans) are ramping up a manufacturing technique for making intricate Nativity figurines, toys, and even hi-fi speaker boxes from a renewable and surprisingly versatile source: liquid wood. check it out

The sign of a great model is that one’s eye is not drawn to any one feature, yet one can study it for hours and continually find something new.

I'm sure the "treehuggers" will put an end to it as soon as they find out about it.

This is good news. Apparently this is derived from the waste product they usually get rid of when making paper and other products.

I wonder if it becomes brittle? Seems like it would be easier to paint than plastic.

I've heard of this as well before. Indeed it's from an already made by-product. Very cool if it's durable. It says it's versatile so there's hope, but as it is toys can often deteorate over time fairly quickly, so hopefully this is indeed durable stuff... if it becomes "mainstream". Unfortunately I wouldn't count on it being used extensively right away.
