Small Scale Military Headquarters

Anybody else think that 1:18 scale models/toys of historic spacecraft would be a good idea?

I've seen somewhat large scale toy versions of the Apollo capsule, but nothing with the realism of the aircraft produced by 21st Century or BBI. Given that 21st is expanding into a new era with the 104, it seems pretty logical to go even further with perhaps the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo; or even all three.

I imagine they would be pretty cost-effective to make and could be lucrative since whoever does it would be the only one (at least that I know of). And it would be so easy to do one very, very well.

Any thoughts

I think a 1:18 Space Shuttle on a 747 would be awsome, but I think size would be an issue. Same for a Saturn 5 rocket. But I do think a Lunar module, that would pay tribute to Armstrong for landing on the moon, would be a neat thing to do

I'm not a space collector anymore, but I would think that 1:18 space stuff would sell well, especially if the shuttle ever gets going again...

An F-104 in NASA colors would be pretty neat too.

I'd love to see some 1960s era US spacecraft and astronaut figures, but I wouldn't hold my breath!

A buddy of mine mentioned to me an interest he had in 1:18 space shuttles and things... Figures and the like as well I think. He was wondering if 21st had any plans to go with that, and to me it seems pretty logical that this could perhaps be an avenue they pursued at some point.

I'm not sure I'd be into them, but some voices are saying they are... That's something.

Here's something to tide people over until something better comes out. I'm not sure what scale it is, but it doesn't seem too undersized. GI Joe put out a few years pack a five pack of figures that I don't think was available in the US. One of the figures was a 3-3/4" replica of the old 1960's gemini astronaut with his capsule. It's not too bad looking, probably could be repainted and detailed to look nicer. I'm happy with mine the way it is. This auction is way overpriced compared to what I've seen them go for, but you can see the capsule.

actually i think it's a mercury capsule. A bit small and crude but not bad. Not worth the money unless you want all the other dudes too, in my view.

Good heads up though. I wonder if there are any old model kits that would be close to 1/18. Some of the early space capsules were pretty small, so it's possible.

I don't think we'll see space stuff in 1/18, but you never know.

I was thinking that with the 104 being made, it makes sense to do something with '60s NASA aircraft as well as the spacecraft. I think an X-1 and especially an X-15 would be fantastic as 1:18 scale reproductions.

That whole period of aviation development was astounding. And it seems to get people's attention (ie, "The Right Stuff," "Apollo 13," etc.). The possibilities are really there for something good.

Thanks for the correction, Aferg. Early Monday brain cramp. A couple years back I got a boxed set in a damaged box for $18. Just have to keep the eyes open.

My wife collects some of the space stuff (holdover from when she worked at NASA). Unless there is something going on to tie into (Apollo 13 movie, big probe landing, etc.) space stuff sells pretty poorly. When Pathfinder landed, you couldn't touch the Hot Wheels sets. A few months later, they were rotting on clearance shelves.

i actually saw on ebay a few months ago a 1/18 diecast special edition model of a lunar rover. It was something like $150 so i passed on it but it was quite nice. They may be around on super duper discount, who knows.

If I remember correctly, didn't Aurora make a model of the lunar module back in the 60's. I don't remember the scale though.
