There is the 3rd wave of Zeros (Kamakaze ) planes coming in. We don't have any Navy guns to shoot 'em down. The Quad 40 mm Bofors guns will do the job.
Oh... but none have been made in 1/18 scale . Is there a need for them ?

I think it would be awesome! I always liked watching them on the Spectres. Quite the weapon, like the 'Ma Deuce', quality never gets old or goes out of style, just keeps taking down the bad guys.

The last post got me thinking. I think a 1 18 scale AC-130 Spectre would be awesome. I can picture it hanging from my ceiling banked at an angle. If ya gotta dream, dream big I say. Any other thoughts?

Quad 50s were installed on American carriers late in the war. Basically, they tried to cram as much firepower as possible to combat kamikazes, but they ran out of space for 40mms and 20mms.

A quad 40mm mount would look awesome.

do you have any pictures of a quad 50 on a carrier?

My first reaction was why not make a twin Bofors setup and then mont them on the 21st XD M41. But then I realized that it would take a lot of work on the hull to make the M42 Duster out of the M41.

If there was an M5 we could mate it with the Quad .50!!!!

I have one of these (or something very similirar) in 1/6 scale that GI Joe made years ago. Its in storage somewhere (imagine that), haven't seen it in years.

I have two and they are on guard for any Zeros wondering into my AO.

Actually, a single 40MM makes a great towed AA gun (anybody remember Sgt. Frank Tree {Dan Aykroyd} explaining its use in "1941"???). The same gun was mounted on some WW2 Half-tracks.

I don't think there's a whole lot of pictures of them, since they were only installed on 2 Essex-class carriers, and an light/escort carrier (forgot which type).

Here's a pic I found of a quad mount on U.S.S. Lexington. Pic was probably taken after Lexington's last refit, because of the dual 20mm guns.

i read somewhere it was an experimental fitting on the Lexington but wasn't proceeded with on other carriers, no reasons given....do you know the names of any other carriers that had the quad 50 mount? Lexington of course was way before the kamikaze threats appeared.

Perhaps a use for the quad trailer (sans the trailer).

My Grandpa was a loader on a 40mm Bofors aboard his LST in WWII.

Can't find any info on the quad .50 used on carriers in WW2. Extensive mention of .50 cal being used on carriers but they don't refer to the quad 50.

All carriers started WW2 with 40mm, 20mm, 1.1 quads and .50 cals. Every time the carriers came into Pearl or SFO, their AA divisions were updated with the favorite of the day. Twin .20mms replaced the quad 1.1's and quad 40mm's replaced dozens of .50 cals. This went on all through the war.

Light carriers, and "Jeep" carriers carried 20mm and .50 cals by the dozens throughout the war. Can't find any mention of quads. If it wasn't for GooglyD's very clear pic on the Lex, I'd say their existence was in doubt because so many single .50 cals on big ships were constantly being replaced by the heavier 20mm twins. I tend to think that the quad .50 in the pic was an test and would have been replaced by the more powerful 20mm.

the quads were a test but they wouldn't have been replaced with larger guns as they wouldn't fit....that was the idea behind using the small quad turrets.

"By 1945 the single mount 20mm was shown to be somewhat lacking in bringing down the suicide aircraft. Twin 20's were replacing them during yard periods. Fitting four Hispano aircraft type guns to the army mount was considered. Instead the navy used the typical Maxon quad .50. Six mounts were installed on the Wasp and six on the Lexington, each replacing a single mount 20mm. The Cape Gloucester recieved four quad .50's. Don't know if any were credited with any kills."

Found another pic from the Lex in 1945. The caption of this pic and the pic GooglyD posted says "Army Quad Mark 31" but they look to be Maxon M45 Quad mounts.

Plenty of room for a dual 20mm if they wanted an option.



Now, we just need a section of the Lex.

It's more like 1/22 scale than 1/18 but almost 4 feet long and 5 foot in span. I have one waiting to be painted one day.
