Sneak Peak - Airstrike Toys - Series 3 - USS Tulagi Hellcat

Post by AirstrikeToys » Mon Jun 09, 2008 10:18 pm

Finished with Series 3 - Plane #1 - F6F Hellcat - USS Tulagi.

I'm still working on the correct lighting to get the right color. As you can see the photo, not the model, has a yellowish tint.

Looking for feedback on the exhaust plume. I spent a lot of time researching this characteristic of the Hellcats and most I could find had a rust / black soot plume down both sides and under belly of the plane. Also, you can see the exhaust is applied after the decals so everything should blend well vs. have a stark white number over the weathering.

Lexington should be ready this coming weekend.

Thanks.

I had no idea Hellcats tangled with Krauts. But a quick Google turned up this:

I agree . I thought that the RAF were the only ones who flew the Hellcat in Europe. Thanks to this hobby you do learn something everyday.
Great looking plane !!

Thanks everyone. The other 3 should roll out faster since I have the weathering / exhaust figured out.

As for the Hellcat mixing it up with the Germans, it was a surprise to me too when I was researching the different fighter groups. The german kill marks was one of the primary reasons for picking the Tulagi paint scheme, besides the red cowl stripe. The historian for the USS Tulagi (Mr. Rochford @ navsource) was a big help too.

I'll post more pictures soon.

Persistent… I like that… :D

I will but it’s going to be a while. I have several more series to generate before the RN Hellcat makes it to the top of the list.

Thanks,
Patrick
