My guess is that it was for a deleted action feature. I've heard the bike was intended to "spring action" so it catapulted into the air and summersaulted ala the one Indy stuffed the flag pole into the spokes. Much like the truck's break-out windshield, it was nixed, probably due to cost issues. And that's for the best. ;)

I wonder if it might have something to do with a side car. The peg and hole above the muffler look like two points that a side car could be joined to the motorcycle.

Thanks for the heads up. i have 16 of the bikes and one of the reasons that i was not overly impressed was the bike would not stand up and i looked underneath several times, but never saw the peg. This helps me to appreciate the bike a little more now and i may keep a few riders for them, but i can see i need 30 riders in all, just to fill the seating down spots, i have in vehicles, wagons and on horses. cheers.
the vehicles will be the 2 new Indy trucks and my existing captured usa command vehicles, as drivers, the horses are from the BBI warriers of the world Romans and the 6 wagons are from Schleich.

sorry i did not mean the round peg, i mean the peg stand at the base of the rear tyre, allowing to stand up.
