21st Century P-38 questions

Post by dragon53 » Wed May 14, 2008 1:11 pm

With Badcat's blog predicting another 21st Century 1/18 P-38 being released this year, I have 2 questions:

1. What do think/want will be the next release?
I'm hoping for Richard Bong's P-38
2. Are all of 21st's P-38s from the same mold?

I would say Bong's as well. The Marge is long over do. America's top Ace of WW2 screams to be made.

I sure would like to see a whole new P-38 model in 18th scale. A new tooled, accurate P-38 would be awesome.

Marge needs to be made...I would get that one for sure. Bong was one of the best American Aces.

POKEYJTC:

Thanks. I've seen a few photos of all the 21st P-38s and it appeared they were the same except repaints.

He was not one of the best he was the best. With 40 confirmed kills and the Medal of Honar Medal . Tommy Magyer was the second highest with 39 he also won the Medal. But Mac was not a people person like Bong. 21st has already done Mac's Putt putt Maru. Is it not time for the # 1 guy?

I'll take whichever one they make first.

I would prefer #2---those 40 kills under the canopy are very impressive.

Looking at 21st's new Panther repaint price, I shudder at the price of a new P-38 repaint....but if it's Bong's "Marge", I might buy it.

I too would like to see Marge done, or maybe Down Beat (the name of Bong's plane before he met Marge).

If not Bong's Marge, I would like Rex Barber's P-38---for its historical importance.

Marge was a hottie! I think she passed away in 2003. Bong's P-38 is a must have for all.

I have heard rumors of a new P-38 repaint as well. Here are the bits that have been told to me.

It's not another green plane as Cal Cutie was the latest installment. So Silver is obviously the other option.

I asked specifically about Bong and was told no. Bong is important and his P-38 is well known however Roy did want to see a "more colorful" scheme. "something that would be different from our other P-38's"

-take that info and for those P-38 experts, your guess is a good as mine!

OK That would be a photo recon F-5 in Azore Blue. color  That would not be a bad paint scheme. I am in.
If you want a real colorful one YIPPIE is were it is at. Thanks for the info Britt.

F-5 Recon version of a P-38. Kind of plain looking. (No pun). Some had glass nosecones for cameras. The only defense was to outrun the enemy. No weapons made it faster.

If it's not Bong's or Barber's (green), then my hopes for a historically important P-38 means I won't be buying the next P-38. Like modern jets, there's always die cast if you can't find it in plastic.

Hmmm, looks like 21C is just making it up as they go. Can’t quite understand the thinking behind not making Bong's plane. They made the shark mouth.
Colorful birds are nice but I think from a historical standpoint Bong's plane is a better bird to make. Oh well, maybe its time for a custom.

Franklin Mint makes an expensive diecast "Marge"--no pilot and fixed landing gear. Oh well....

I do love Franklin Mint planes. There expensive but very good quality. I have been thinking of just buying them form here on out. Better selection. Still I will always love 1:18th!!!

There is a camo version. Of course it is British. They will have to back date it and do the more areo dynamic E or F version and get rid of those big "J" chins. This would be cool but repaints mean no rebuilds. Unless they do a rebuild like the P-47. Hmmmmm....... as ifff............

Or they could pull off a late war night fighter. All black with a radar pod under the nose. Now that would be cool and that also covers almost all of the color variants. So.....
1. F-5 blue
2. Yippie orange
3. Night fighter black.
4. British camo. This one would not work with the J but would be real cool anyway.

Those are the almost all of the options . Yippie would be on the bottom of my list . But I will surely take one.
