Please explain to me why, in this case, this is OK with 21c and Admiral. Is it the price point? Is it a subject that they will not produce? Are both looking to see what they can demand in the future? What???

I may be wrong but it maybe because they are not just repaints but reworked fuse's. I can't remember what the percentage was with copyright laws and stuff, but if you change a product (3d or 2d) by a certain amount from the original it is deemed to be a "separate - stand alone" item. Kind of like how performance tuner companies rework cars (kind of).

They are nice!!!

But, they far outclass my "toy collection"

I think items like this will make me strive to do some custom work on my own - for the cost would depleat my "fun money" very quickly.

Really nice looking, but too rich for my blood.

Say the plane is $60, you are paying $340 for labor. Say $20/ hr, that is 17 hours of labor. Does anyone do customs and if so, how long does it take to do one off an already built plane?

Well, the folks at MTS were selling a yellow nose Stuka for $129 a few weeks ago, so maybe their margin is now around $150-200.

I think it's because they're not trying to trademark these as their "own" products.

Actualy it does not. They kept the larger spinner and the big padel blades of the D.

Well my takes is this I could be way off of base on this but this is how I see the pricing.
1. The original model is going for $60 so we are left with. $440
2. The going rate for retailers are 30% = $132 so we are left with $ 308
3. So $300 to $308 that is how much they were selling for on E-bay until he ran out of Fw-190s.
He said that he could buy 30 of them in his last e-bay auction. So that would be the break down as I see it. $500 a bit rich but this is one popular plane. I think that if 21st made the 190a first there would have been sooo many paint schemes they would have made a fortune. Then when these ran there course. Then put out the 190D. But what do I know ?

Well, the way I see it I have to give MTS props for innovation. There isn't another retailer out there trying to do this. So, that wins points in my book.

Well I had a feeling this would create some conversation. I thought I would chime in and answer some questions. The Sky Works Custom Toy Company approached us to offer some of their models. Given how the 1:18 market is basically DEAD at the moment we thought we would explore different avenues for 1:18 aircraft.

Yes these are very expensive relative to what we are used to paying for a 1:18 aircraft. Also I can understand everyone wants a short nosed 190 in there collection and upon seeing the prices gets peeved. We also understand that once a 1:18 aircraft model reaches the $80.00 mark about 80% of collectors are not interested. I don’t think I should have to justify our reason for the pricing, it is clear the cost and time that goes into a custom model. Just refer to Pickelhaube’s thread on his Curtiss P-36 Hawk project.

The next custom aircraft Sky Works will offer will be the 1:18 Me-163 Komet. It will be made completely of resin and will have opening canopy, working rudder, and includes removable undercarriage dolly. I have seen pictures of a completed unpainted prototype and I am very impressed! We have not come up with a price for the Me-163 yet, and I though I would get some input from all of you. Keep in mind that this is made by multiple resin castings, and hand painted in a process that takes hours to finish. I have a feeling we will have to price it around the $300-$400 range. Any constructive input is appreciated.

You're right. You don't have to justify your prices, because from what you've told us, each of these planes are built and painted individually by hand. Customs like that always go for high prices, especially on Ebay.

But at the same time, I feel as consumers, we don't have to justify why we think that $500 for a "simple" custom might be a little too much.

By simple, I meant that there's really nothing outstanding about these planes. They look like a FW-190A on the outside and that's it. And as some members here have pointed out, glaring differences like the propellers have not even been worked on.

For $500, I kinda expected:

1. Ultra-level of details. I'm not expecting the kind of detail you see on those $3,000 museum-quality 1/18th planes, but I kinda expected some obvious fixes, like the props, the undercarriage, various external antennas, gun bays, etc to be included.

2. Maybe a little motor and speakers so that when you turn on a switch, you'll see the propellers move and hear a recording of the FW-190's engine.

Or something. Because in the end, the FW-190 still looks toyish to warrant such a price.
