With the price of these vehicles averaging around $50, what do you collect by? As do you collect one of every paint scheme or just the one of each model. I personally stick to one of each. And if you do collect one of each, what determines which paint scheme you buy? I try to go by which is historical accurate.
The only doubles I have is the P-47, cause one is razorback and the other is BT; Shermans, 75mm gun & 105mm; and the BF-109G & E version.
I did buy the Pappy Corsair, cause of the historically aspect, even though I owned the British Corsair(which is my least favorite)
One of these days I would like to have one of every paint job, but I don't think I could afford that

I am a huge plane fan. For over a year now I have been working at owning each plane and paint scheme produced. There has even been a couple times when I was needing something new to pass the time so I would do a custom plane of my own. I currently have 3 of those finished. In all right now I have about 49 planes in 1:18 scale. When it comes to planes I say the more the better. -Space? yeah this is an issue but I have a solid plan in place to deal with that in the near future. Gotta make room for more!
I also have some favorite tanks and vehicles. I have to have ground targets for my planes to strafe!

Thus far, I have collected one of each plane and vehicle. I have doubles only with the Corsair as I bought the origional Kepford Corsair, and then absolutely had to get the Boyington version when that came out. I guess you could also say I doubled on the ME-109 as I have the origional "White 12" version (ME-109E) and the new Hermann Graf ME-109G. I have both the origional 21c "Lou IV" P-51 and the BBI P-51. Sometimes the whole repaint thing can be irritating, as I get (or in the case of Wal Mart, find) one version only to have another better one show up a few months later!
I am starting to slowly back out of collecting every type of plane, choosing to collect only the really cool or most meaningful aircraft. This is on account of lack of display space. Consequently, I have passed on the BT P-47 and may have to do so on the F-104 as well. We'll, see, however!

I've been collecting more and more of the repaints lately. I've got quite the museum going!
Where do you put them?

I guess I'm not as much of a plane nut, being a Navy puke and all...
The only repaint I've bought was the F-18. Couldn't pass up a combat version AND the Blue Angels. Well, that, and I bought THREE Cobras, but I got them for $10 each from a guy...
Fortunately, I focus on post WWII, so that helps ALOT.
I got lucky in that I picked up a shark-mouth Huey from a friend, then was able to pass on the Air America one. I might pick up a second OH-6/AH-6, if a repaint comes out, depending on what different payloads it comes with (been thinking about doing an ASW version, like the Taiwanese Navy has...)
Of course, I can't even tell you how many 21C AH-6's I have. I have two on display (AT yellow and USN Grey) and one custom Jim Catero job that's carefully packed away, but I think I have 5-6 others packed in boxes in the basement...

Tman: I'm with you about the F-104. Who knows, maybe you will win it in 21st's contest

I've got just about every paint scheme out there. My policy is pretty much Buy 2, Display 1. However, through the years, I invariablly would end up getting the whole run of a plane or vehicle. I have hanging or displayed one of each aircraft and vehicle, the rest are stacked up in the attic or in the basement.
I keep telling myself that I have to stick with just a single paint scheme, but it ain't workin'.
These things are just insane.....

The P40 was the only one I went for all the schemes on, really because I was lucky enough to find all the variants on clearance. Space is the biggest concern. Even if I didn't mind spending the money for all of them, just no room (DANG YOU WITH BASEMENTS!!!!!!!)

I go for multiples pf all the paint schemes where armor is concerned. I just can't get enough. I'm not that into the planes though I do have a bunch of them. I usually just buy the planes if they are on clearance. If they are cheap I just buy whatever they have. That way if a really cool plane comes out later at full price all I have to do is take one of my clearance planes back and exchange it for another.

I know this is a little OT, but reading these posts, it seems that for most of us, this hobby is an addiction
But there are far worse things we could be addicted to. I look at what nonessential items people my age spend loads of money on: CDs, video games, unnecessary electronic accessories, alcohol, clothes, and the like and realize that even if I'm paying an average of $30 - $50 for an XD vehicle or plane, it costs just as much as a video game; for many of those fancy electronic items, one could get several XD items! Besides, the XD stuff, IMHO, is far more interesting!

Ideally I'd like to have one of each paint scheme for the planes, but between cost, space, and the fact that I came late to the game and have alreday missed out on a lot of these, I probably never will.
The armor on the other hand I definitely intend to get one of each, since I'm more into that and there aren't nearly as many variations as the planes. I also have one of each paint scheme of all the helicopters (the only part of my collection thats complete)

I definatly hear you about space! I have about 5 aircraft o hang at the moment, and room is very little as it is. At some point, I know I'll run out of room. He he
