AVG P-40B Spec. Ed.

Let the bashing begin
(In ref. to the beating BBD took awhile back).

Saw this up at Area 21, nice box art and I like the paragraph that goes with it explaining exactly why it's being re-released. Now if just some adjustments to the mold could be made.....

I agree, I will take a box with no art if the P-40B model in the box was retooled.

I agree with MG-42's sentiments regarding the re-release of the Flying Tigers P-40. Even though I saw some for sale in person back in the day, I failed to get them and sort of regretted it. 21c gave us a second chance! Now, while they're at it, why not a re-release of the AH-1W Supercobra in the green and gray "Marine Land Cammo" markings - I didn't get that one when I had the chance, either

I just picked up a loose AVG P-40 a few weeks ago and wish I had waited for it's re-release. The Chinese markings are poorly done stickers which kind of stick out like a sore thumb. Oh well, a piece of history I guess. :?

Yeah the roundel decals are the only way to go, maybe 21st will include decals this time instead of big ole thick stickers???hint hint.. The box art is truly awesome imo, just wish at least some adjustments to the cockpit and canopy would be made. I have mixed emotions about re-releasing stuff. On one hand it's cool because it allows the guys to get one that missed it before or are just getting into the hobby, on the other hand, from a collector standpoint it's nice to have an OOP item as the value will just continue to climb. A re-release has the potential to hurt a once OOP items value..imo. Now if they would change something about the plane...MOLD for instance or markings then I don't see how it would affect the earlier versions value..

I'll be picking it up as well since I sold the AVG and the RAF versions I had acquired sometime ago.

I can confirm that the Roundels this time around will be the higher quality model decals. 21st hated those stickers as much as anyone else. Back then they were not producing the water slide decals as much as they are now. the 1:32 model kits opened up that door a little more I think. I just wish that China would allow the stars to be tampo printed... Oh well. Also, just a point of interest: Notice that the box art shows the aircraft in such a way as to not show the roundels on the wings. That was on purpose for the same reason they we don't get tampo printed roundels!

Perhaps China could simply misprint the markings, say not have the same number of points around the star or whatever. I know the rivet counters here would have a hissy fit over that, but it wouldn't be the exact same insignia as used by the Nationalists.

Or you could simply have the planes manufactured in Taiwan

Nevertheless, the decals sound like a much better idea than the stickers!

LOL- Yeah, it's not ideal in any form of solution but- ANYTHING is better then those stickers! I HATED those things sooo much! I ended up making a vinyl sticker mask myself and then airbrushed the star / sun on myself. Looks 1000% better!

The decal solution should be much nicer than the sticker. I still don;t fully understand the reasons for that roundel to be offensive... Oh well.

Although the box art is cool, the P-40 is one of the worst 1:18 aircraft molds ever (next to the original Mustang) Wish it was of the quality and caliber of the Spitfire and BF-109G.

You know, I have the original AVG P-40, and I really have to agree. The mold is awful compared to some of the other offerings.... It's Ironic that this is the one they choose to do repaints and re-releases of. Personally, I'd rather see the Spitfire re-released or re-painted. Hell, I'd even love some P-47 repaints.

P.S. I hope someone does a new mold of a late model P-40N in 1/18th. For the record, 21st century's 1/48th scale mold of the p-40N is gorgeous.

How true.

As mountain-man noted above, the 1/48 scale version is far more accurate than the 1/18 version. What the heck happened :?:  To produce two of basically the same planes and to have them turn out so alarmingly different is ridiculous.

I have often contemplated trying to fix this plane, but end up throwing my hands up in the end. If ever there was an XD release that would give the rivet counters something to gripe about, the P-40 is it. A missing marking, minor QC issues, parts not quite fitting as they should........ I can deal with these defects. After all, these aren't $5K, museum quality replicas. BUT, to TOTALLY botch the overall profile of this very unique plane is pretty lame. Then to re-release it? Way to go 21C.... not only are you putting a hideous rendition of one of the worlds most famous planes back on the shelves, you're sticking it to the long time collectors who only held on to their P-40's because they were so hard to find. Certainly not because they captured the essence of the original.

TKO, none of this is directed towards you in any way, after all, you are just the messenger. I just feel like 21C's integrity is going down the tubes [Toilet flushing]. I understand they are trying to find the most efficient way to make a dollar, but their tactics as of late, to me at least, are disturbing.

Now, back to your regular programming.

Yeah the P-40 definitely still belongs in the "toy" category as it's toyish to say the least. They eventually fixed the Mustang as it was the epitomy of toyish just wished they'd fix the P-40 prior to putting in such a sweet package. I guess they were in a rush to appeal to TRU and gettem' on the shelves?

Yeah, the P-40 is at the bottom of my favorite list, only being suplanted only by the equally cartoonish bbi Hellcat..... :?

But I'd probably get one of these. Missed out on them the first time around.

Guys I still think it's a cool paint scheme , as an old mold I agree but how many of us that just have one. The first batch’s are going for big bucks on eBay and since I can’t afford those prices to get one I can’t wait to get my huge finger around this one. Until 21st up grades this mold this one will have to do for me.

Well I was disappointed to buy the 1/18th P-40 offering by 21st after getting the 1/48 P-40N, only to find that it was lacking. The profile of the big mouth intake on the P-40N is so "badass".

You're right, I'm not! It drives me nuts how some planes can come out of the hanger just about spot-on and others look silly. The Hellcat is one of these planes. I did this shot when the Hellcat first came out to show just how far off the canopy is. I also modified one of my P-47's successfully to a far more realistic look by trimming down the canopy and windshield.....

Yes, I am picky, but with all of the work done on these planes, why not get them right the first time?
