What material are these tanks made of?

Been looking at a lot of the 1/16 radio controlled tanks on ebay. Some are called "airsoft" which run $30-$40 up to the Trumpeter brand which run $80-$90. Though certainly not on par detail wise with the 1/16 FOV, the detail on some doesn't look bad for the price. Some of the $30 ones would be worth the price just to get the accessories off them which would work fine with 1/18. My question is, what are they made of? Are they made of a decent weight plastic. Not interested in the RC aspect, just that some of them look really good for the price.

Depends on the tank you are looking for. The $30-$40 airsoft tanks you are looking at sound like the "Heng Long" R/C tanks. They are made of plastic which is pretty solid. Details are pretty good as well. I have a Panzer 3 and Tiger 1 and find the quality of the plastic to be solid. Some of the details are molded into the plastic however. I've heard the Trumpeter tanks have fine details, but have far flimsier plastic construction. A lot of info and pictures of the details on these tanks can be found here.

Check out some of these for 1/16 accessories like tools, stowage equipment, etc. Not sure how well 1/16 parts would work with 1/18 though.

Hope that helps some.

I have a bunch of the Hen Long brand Pershing tanks, I got a good price for buy them by the case, but found them to be too large

I too found them of good construction and cut one up for parts for kitbashing. I will be selling these someday, but wouldn't mind trading them for 1 18th 21C, BBI or FOV items

TIGER FOV 1/16 vs TIGER HENG-LONG 1/16 SMOKE and SOUND.
The Material is cheap for the heng-long but the price too
The Material is ok for the FOV but i want more metal for the price (poor in metal)
My first FOV 1/16 KING-TIGER is very good
