ww2collecter,
Some craft stores sell quick setting modeling clays that work for less intricate items like boxes and sand bags.
Very heavy but very cheap.

Gotta give a second for Buildarama - they have a great variety of quality stuff.
Also - PowerTeamElite (available at KBtoys and other places) come with plastic crates, oil barrels, and plasticformed sandbags, and other type stuff.

I think that sculpy clay works for almost everything including hats. Also, Build-a-Rama has supplied us with plenty of specialty items that you may never find anywhere else.

In regards to using clay, the best product for the job is Sculpey brand, sold at most craft stores. This product allows you to simply bake it in your oven when you're done sculpting it, and takes paint fairly well when primered.
