forcerecon85 wrote:Actually I say with much national pride, the furthest recorded kill was by Cpl Rob Furlong of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, March 2002 in Afghanistan. The kill was 2,430 metres or 1.51 miles using a McMillan TAC-50 .50cal bolt action sniper rifle. :D at that range he had to take the earth's rotation into account.

The previous record was by USMC sniper Carlos Hathcock Feb 1967 in Vietnam at a range of 2500 yards or 2266 metres using a M2 .50cal machine gun with a scope attached. I'm not sure which is more amazing.

A bit more on topic, I laugh at the 21c sharpshooter only because if he was such a good shot, I don't think he would need that bayonet
Continuing the off topic portion of this thread :D anything over 1000 meters is generally considered to take a huge amount of marksmanship skill. Not to take anything away from Cpl Furlong but it amazes me that Hathcock could make that kind of shot with such a jury rigged weapon without the benefit of modern range finding equipment. Of course he was shooting from a sand-bagged position on a hill top and all the distances to landmarks like roads and hills had probably been previously marked off it's still an impressive shot. I read his book years ago. He was an impressive character.

Back on topic... It's a shame that with 21C's distribution many of us will probably never get these figures unless we pay inflated online prices. I've still yet to see any dual packs or the Bruno Bauer figure. Others may consider them must haves but I'm not paying $15+ for a figure I should be able to find for $5.

Yeah, I agree with that. I've yet to find ANY dual packs in this area. WWII or VN. I don't think they're coming, period.

No luck finding the US machine gunner, "sniper" or German assault gunner and Dual Packs have not made it east yet. I'll give it some more time. Its a shame 21st doesn't have control over distribution of its products, but once it leaves China it seems to be up to Walmart, Target and TRU as to what part of the country product shows up in.

Were you serious about the earth's rotation? Damn, you can't just be a soldier/sniper anymore, you have to be a mathmatician/sniper.

Carlos Hathcock lived locally, in Pungo, in Virginia Beach and sadly passed away of multiple sclerosis in 1999.
There is a three part interview on YouTube with him! Long live a legend!

yes, just as artillery crews, ships crews (ships that used guns) etc. have to take into account the earth's rotation, so do long range snipers. The "Coriolis effect" is the name given to the apparent bend in trajectory of a projectile that is fired at a distance. What is actually happening of course is that the earth is rotating under the projectile as it travels, so it makes it appear that the projectile's course was bent. At the equator the surface of the earth is moving at about 1000 mph.

Over the distance of a mile or so, the effect of the earth's rotation is very small, but when you're trying to hit a head or torso, inches count. With the world record shot the flight time of the bullet was around 4 seconds...the effect of the earths rotation was several feet.

It gets even trickier when you are not perpendicular to the earth's rotation but at some angle too it because then the effect is reduced but to know by how much you have to know your exact orientation with respect to the axis of rotation of the earth. You also have to know your distance from the equator, because the effect is reduced the further you are from it. This is where trigonometry comes in handy....sines and cosines.

I need a car! :D

I'm glad that Toyota sitting in my garage is a 4-cylinder! All these years I wanted an El Camino, nope, look how this payed off. Just gotta get going with my boss today, set money aside over time, and fix some small things, and get my license.

Then I'll be hitting every Wal-Mart I can. I hate when my friends never stop at Wal-Mart when we pass right by them when we come back from skating, doesn't make sense... Air conditioning, $.25 drinks, and recon. Nope, just because they know I'm going to look at toys. :?

They don't really care, if we actually are going to Wal-Mart, they go with me to the toy section and mess around, but they just like to do it because they know, just like me, there's usually nothing new. :?

Believe me, noone really makes fun of me for it. Mainly because everyone I know collects or does different things. So if someone gives me flak, I got an 88 right back at 'em! One of my buddies is whipped, big time, his brother is a grunge boy, another friend is a pothead, my other friend wears rapist glasses (those big goofy thick 70's ones, yeah) and my friend Chelsea doesn't wear shoes. :D What a motley assortment of misfits.

Something to add...my girlfriend called me about 15 minutes ago, to tell me she found new GI Joe stuff at WalMart, and she got it for me. THAT is a nice feeling, haha.

...but, still no new 21st stuff. Still the three pegs FULL of Platoon figures.
