Another fact:

Since A-10 production ended more than 20 years ago and the machinery to make replacement parts is long gone, most A-10s are maintained through extensive refitting and the use of recycled parts - from other A-10s :)

(Sorry of this was already said!)

Thanks for the cool fact Tman. Much appreciated. :D

Another Hawg Fact to add to the A-10's upkeeping or sustaining:

In January 1998, Lockheed Martin Federal Systems in Owego, New York, was chosen by the Air Force to become the new "prime contractor" for the A-10. The contract was a $488 million dollar nine year contract and requires Lockheed Martin to develop and integrate modifications such as software, support infrastructure, and to be the primary provider of sustaining engineering. In the years after Fairchild-Republic had ceased to exist as an aircraft manufacturer and the years before Lockheed Martin was awarded it's A-10 contract, the sustaining of the A-10 was performed by Grumman. After Grumman's hard times and its merge with Northrop, the Air Foce sustained the A-10 "in-house" for a while. The Air Force then decided a contractor was needed to perform the sustaining which brought Lockheed Martin's selection.

Hawg Fact:

Out of the 713 A-10s produced, 357 are still in service with active, Gaurd, and Reserve Units. 236 of the 357 A-10s have been given forward air control capability in addition to its CAS role. The FAC role of the A-10 (OA-10) is dependent on the aircraft's ordinance and pilot's FAC training and not on any difference among the aircraft.

Hawg Fact:

In November of 1977, the Joint Attack Weapon Systems (JAWS) test was held at Fort Hunter Ligget in California. These tests were conducted to see how effective the A-10 and the Army's AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter worked together. The A-10s would concentrate on conventional ground targets (tanks, artillery, etc.), while the Cobras attacked air defense systems. The results: Kill ratios went up three to four times over when each aircraft operated independently.

Hawg Fact:

After evaluations from the JAWS tests, Operation CORONET FILLEY, and PORKER 500, Lt. General Kelly Burke, Deputy Chief of Staff for USAF Research, Development, and Acquisition testified at the Military Posture hearings in March of 1980 that, "We get a higher sortie rate from the A-10 than any of our aircraft. It is capable of about six sorties per day and had the lowest operating cost of any of our first line fighters."

Hawg Fact:

The A-10 was sent to Europe as part of the USAF's anti-armor commitment to NATO. At the time, NATO was facing a disadvantage in tank strength against the Warsaw Pact of almost 3 to 1. The A-10 was put into place to counter this threatening ratio.

Hawg Fact:

In the beginning of Operation Desert Storm, the Air Force was hesitant in deploying the A-10 against the Iraqi Army. The Iraqi Army was the fourth largest army in the world at that time with over 4,000 tanks and 4,000 artillery pieces. The upper command of the Air Force favored higher speed fighters like the F-16 and F-15. This decision was overturned by the commander of the Coalition forces, United States Army General Schwarzkopf and several squadrons of A-10s were deployed to the Gulf region. Since he was any army man, Schwarzkopf was very aware of the A-10's capabilities. I would say the A-10s proved their worth.

Patience is definitely a virtue in this hobby. Especially when it comes to modern subjects. Just keep saving your money and when the day comes that we get more modern equipment (hopefully an A-10 Warthog some day) you can buy a ton of it..... :D :D

Hawg Fact:

During Operation Desert Storm, the A-10 was used as a Scud Hunter. A-10s were sent up in teams that orbited, waiting for a signal from surveillance aircraft above to start looking for newly targeted Scud missile launchings. A-10 pilots would trace the missile's flight path back to the general area where it had been fired from. They would then visually locate the launcher and kill it. The Scud hunting missions were flown out of a forward operating base in Al Jouf.
