Russians had the highest number of casualties of the allies in WWII.
Casualties for the Russians : 23,200,000 Total deaths.
Incl. - Militaries : 10,700,000 ; Civilians : 11,500,000 and Jewish Holocaust : 1,000,000 (only in the part of Russia invaded by the Germans...).
Casualties for the Americans : 418,500 Total deaths.
Nowadays I don't think the Russians are in a way to a new Cold War. Of course Poutin (ex-KGB spy and Mig fighter pilot is a pure product of the old school and Bush Jr. is, well... loosing his time and ruining his country by making a useless war in a country were Oussama Ben Laden have never been). We are living the beginning of a new era, some specialists are telling us we will see the end of the petrol in no more than 50 years and after we will have to create new sources of power and industry. All the new conflicts will be located in the countries that have Petrol and Gas - Russia is one of them and they fear to be a potential target, at least in the southern countries like Chechenia.

To me the problems will probably come from other countries like China and India (Almost 50% of the whole world population is located in these two countries, if you count the other Asia countries : it is 60% !!!). These countries are poor but are becoming rich, they will need to grow more and will need more and more energy (but we have less and less non-renewable, fosil energy). Then it is logical to believe we will see more and more conflicts related to the energy sources.

Another data to keep in mind :
The world population evolution (as we agree we are living on a planet that doesn't grow...).
1910 : 1,750 billion.
2005 : 6,500 billions.
2050 : 9,075 billions (estimate).
Then we are more and more everyday and we have less and less ressources. We are growing at a frightening rate and it probably means we will see several major conflicts in the (near?) future.
