The sign of a great model is that one’s eye is not drawn to any one feature, yet one can study it for hours and continually find something new.

Finally got mine! I had to do some minor paintings.

First I re-did Wittmann's face. His face just looked fugly. Then I painted over the markings. I wonder why they put 1st company markings on a 2nd company vehicle.... :?

Then I repainted the the axe, shovels, etc, to make them look more realistic.

GooglyDoogly,

Ditto on the paint touch ups. One of the first things I did was get the "tar" off of Wittman's face and paint out the 1st company marking also.

I will be adding the grill covers and periscope glass, BUT, compared to the King Tiger, Tiger 222 is a walk in the detail park. Unimax listened.

Can't wait to see what the next paint scheme will be....

FYI........

I just got this from UNIMAX in regards to future 1:16 figures and accessories.

"We are going to launch new 1:16 items in 2007. We will annouce for the details of them soon."

Things are looking bright for us ground pounders in 07!

I see some sites already have the Tiger as "Overstocked" - I really hope Unimax realizes that these expensive 1/16 endeavors aren't worth it and they scale down to 1/18....Just the shipping alone on these suckers make them that much harder to buy..

Personally, I hope Unimax continues their Extreme Metal 1:16 scale due to the amount of custom 1:16 armor parts and figures that are available from companies like Tamiya, Wecohe, Dragon, and Schumo.

1:18 just does not have the extent of detailed modeling products and I prefer static 1:16 model figures when building realistic dioramas, articulated toy action figures just don’t cut it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love 1:18 vehicles and am working on Willi Fey’s Tiger I from the SS Panzer Abt 102…but it has been a hard road of scratch building and modifying 21st Century’s Tiger.

I think I'll stick to affordable 1:18 "toy" action figures and armor. You millionaires can have your pricey 1:16 museum pieces.

Believe it or not, 1/16 is more known and accepted than 1/18th, that's why Unimax chose to make tanks in this scale.

They're really not after the 1/18th market..their target are the more established 1/16 Tamiya crowd.

It's the holiday season. Most people of who will buy these for themselves are probably tapped out because they bought presents for their loved ones first.

Dads always end receiving their gifts last. :D

Besides, I doubt Unimax is such a bad company that after losing money on their 2 king tiger releases, they release a brand new tank. :)

Yea, I know 1/16 has a lot to offer...more reason imo to leave that scale be and jump in among the the few 1:18 offerings. :D But I hear you - Unimax ain't dumb....that's why I used the word "hope" - it is sort of wishful thinking on my part. I'm with Rowsdower that this stuff is just out of my league.

I did notice that they cut some corners on this tank - interior, packaging, etc..perhaps most 1/16 enthusiasts appreciate RC more than static...especially at $400....

1/16 vs 1/18 et al

Post by kennyj » Wed Dec 20, 2006 6:38 am

I heartily agree, Yox. Both are great scales. I wish somebody would wise up and market some 1/18 accessories tho. There's a rumor that a 1/18 Tiger II is in the works at 21st C. Anybody got any intel on that?

Yox, do you have any pix of your Willi Fey kitbash you'd be willing to share?

On the braille scale front, I found that the muffler shrouds pop of quite nicely on the Dragon 1/72 Tiger I's. Then it's an easy fix to switch 'em or leave them off entirely.

All the best. The Squid.
In cordial comradeship,

The Squid

I know what you are saying, but...

I think Unimax dropped the advertising ball on this one. When the news was released that Unimax was to release a late model Tiger 1, all the press said, “No interior, no ammo crate packaging, and the proto type photos showed the wrong track wheel configuration.

….I decided to pass. Too expensive and not enough detail.
(Also I still felt burned from the first release King Tiger.) It was NOT at all like the prototype model photos they posted. Much too toy like, and it took a lot of scratch work and extra $ to get it right. Very sour taste in my mouth.

Then I see the Tiger 1 in person and am blown away. They did a great job detail wise, much better than the KT, the packaging is very well done, (The ammo crate from the KT is so cumbersome, I ended up sticking it up in the garage rafters) and there is a very detailed interior that you can see from any open hatch. (Maybe the Chinese translation of “no removable turret” came off as no interior detail)

So I shelled out the bucks. Yes the damn thing is expensive, but it was actually cheaper than trying to convert a 1:16 early model Tiger into a late with all the upgrade parts and I was already saving my money for an the 1:18 Avenger, 1:18 ME262, and a 1:16 schwimmwagen, but decided to shift the funds.

Happy holidays to all, and a Great New Year…. the 1:18 King Tiger from 21st will be a great start to 2007!

I will post some pics of the Fey's Tiger 134 as soon as I finish the zimmerit on it

Installed the protective mesh screens over the cooling air inlets and outlets on Tiger 222.

I notice that, despite their recent holiday overstock sale, Badcat now has the FOV 1/16 tiger 1 back to their normal price!

Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!
