They used to do that, then all of a sudden they were separated usually over on the next isle.

Maybe Hasbro made an agreement with Walmart for that. I'm sure they have a lot of pull on where and what gets stocked next to what.
I mean if I saw a 21st 1:18 tank next to a GI Joe tank I would buy the one that looks more real.
21st Century vehicles blow the hell out of the cheezy GI Joe vehicles.
I don't think Hasbro wants the competition.

As i recall it there's a deal between Lanard and Wally World.

Plus they sell. If 21st was coming in at Lanard's pricepoint they might get the same space as well, but to be honest they're 2 different animals.

Hate on it all you want, but it moves, at least well enough to stay in walmarts head to head with the big guns.

And while they may look better the 21st stuff doesn't have the brand recognition of Joe (who in turn doesn't have the pull of Star Wars).

Again it all comes to price and shelf space. The Corps! has it and 21st doesn't.

No offense to anyone, as I think a lot of what's being said is just passion about the hobby, but it shows a real lack of understanding the world of toys... And that's to be expected because nobody works in the industry.

The fact is though, kids and collectors buy GI Joe because GI Joe is GI Joe... Seeing an XD Tank next to a HISS tank doesn't mean a piss, to be blunt. The GI Joe collector is going to buy the HISS Tank because it's a HISS. A kid will buy the HISS because it's a HISS. It's comparing apples and oranges.

NOw, a customizer might buy an XD item or something, but really GI Joe fans want GI Joe toys. Talk to a lot of them and they'll flat out say they want the line as it is, and I understand where they're coming from on that.

The Corps line is what it is too... It's an inexpensive line of figures, unlicensed, to sell to frugal buyers... Kids with an allowance and nothing else they can afford, parents on a budget, etc.

And XD appeals to its market... Mostly collectors I'd imagine, but kids who see a WW2 guy like their favorite games have, or whatnot. Casual buyers who are history buffs, which is usually how most of us get into this I think... It's all pulling for your wallet, so it's all competition, but the core markets are there for each group too. People who buy XD and wonder why GI Joe sells better and why the two aren't side-by-side are just more into XD and don't "get" why GI Joe fans want GI Joes.

I collected GIJ as a kid, it was THE toy line to me... Nothing better than it. I sorta wish I was into it today but the $$$ is too much for me (too many hobbies if I got into that). It's great looking stuff though and every figure reminds me of my childhood.

XD I buy because I dig history and I've been with the line since its inception... Plus it's relatively cheap by comparison, and sporadic.

I collected GiJoe and sold a lot of GiJoe back in the day - I bought a hiss because it was a Hiss. I bought a Bradley because it looked awesome and better than a hiss and wanted if for My GiJoe - :D

when it comes to price 21C will always be a little higher. the products have tougher aint schemes and they do pay royalties to avaition companies and many of the planes pilots. This costs far more than making a basic toy.

You and i are exceptions rather than rules (personally i think the HISS will always suck, and would much rather have Cobra tool around in Tigers). The big complaints i hear from Joe fans are they're "too big" and "too realistic".

This coming from the group that bitches about neon colors, ninjas and Star Brigade.

Do you also think it's because Lanard manages to keep The Corps STOCKED in ALL WM's, where as when 21C GETS the shelf space, it's hit or miss or nothing at all in WM's ALL OVER the country?!

That's a part of the issue, i suppose.

Still, little Johnny can't afford the 21st stuff, and mom's not gonna pay for something that won't pass the kid test, not at 40 and sure as hell not at 80+.

I wanted to use the BBI LAVs for cobra assult vehicles - when they first came out - but they never went on sale - and for some reason when they finally did I passed due to the hatches - Finally picked one up years later at Target but no longer had a drive to make 10 cobra vehicles sigh.....basically I had kids.

I did the same thing. I bought the BBI LAV and painted it black, and purchased some of those COBRA insignia stickers and fixed them to the vehicle. I call it a HISS, because in my mind a HISS is just an APC with a 20 mil, hah.

However, I also agree with the above statements. I'm a HUGE GI Joe fan, and I buy both lines of toys. I'm a history buff and a Joe nut. I still buy the HISS tanks, because they're freakin' HISS tanks. I buy Tiger I's because they're freakin' Tiger I's, haha.

I think these sales, locations, and general issues are very closely associated to fanbase.

The only thing I really hated about the HISS tank were the cheesy molded treads... I wanted it to have treads like the MOBAT tank.

Part of the issue nowadays is that GI Joe is already an established franchise.
If they had BBI & 21C when GI Joe arrived on the scene 25 years ago, I would have chosen them over the Joes.

However, I did add a few 25th Anniversary Snake Eyes figures to my collection...
Damn you Hasbro!

Check around the Joe sites and things... People who collect Joe, the vast majority anyway, like Joe for being Joe... They like the Stinger, and the Vamp for being what they are, and they don't necessarilly want to replace them with Humvees...

They like the MOBAT, and the Mauler, and don't want to replace them with the Abrams or Bradley. They like what the show/comic/series was based on... The size of a "real" tank does bug them. They like some added detailing like more opening hatches or whatnot, but ultimately they seem to want a trouble bubble, a fang, a Rattler (not an A-10, a Rattler!), and more.

Some guys deco up some modern stuff to "fit" but it's pretty clear the guys that want to slip a Bradley into their collection and have Steeler cruising around in a COOL ride, are the minority unfortunately. I like the Bradley more for sure, but as a Joe fan since it was my all-time fav toy line from my childhood (still is... I love Star Wars but GIJ will always be special to me), I prefer seeing updated versions of the vehicles Joes had rather than seeing them riding around in modern armor and vehicles.

About the only thing I sway on there is planes, but even that I'm flexible on. I mean, Cobra's main battle plane is based on the A-10... How could it go against ANYTHING else in the sky?!?!?! But I love it, and wouldn't see Wild Weasel in anything but that.

Back OT a little bit here 8) I'm starting to wonder if 21st really is out of WM. I've been cruising around the ATL area and noticed that the stores have the planogram sheets up in the toy aisles for the Spring 09 layouts. Some stores I don't see a single space for 1/18 or 32x, others have spaces for 32x aircraft and playsets as well as a space for 1/18 figures (usually shown on the bottom shelf though where there aren't pegs). I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that they're going to be keeping 21st product at some of the stores.

Planograms

Post by lightning2000 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:07 pm

Hi,
Back in the day, part of my job as a merchandise manager was to set up planograms based upon information provided to me by the buyer regarding product availability. It doesnt pay to set up a section if the product isnt expected 6 months hence and all you have is empty pegs during that timeframe. Retailers want to maximize sales for every foot of shelf space created for any given line.

So, if a manufacturer fails to hit a targeted release date, its quite possible the retailer wont work them into any future planograms, especially if other more compelling lines are coming to market. Obviously, there are lines such as Star Wars, Transformers, and GI Joe that can pretty much write their own ticket, since these are lines many people are still clamoring for. Nondescript WWII vehicles and aircraft are quite another thing, unless you can establish brand loyalty in a hurry and can back up these brands with print or TV advertising.

Keep in mind too that many retailers conduct year end inventories at this time of year, which are followed by Toy Fair. It makes no sense to create a planogram too early if the buyer and merchandising manager havent seen the upcoming products due out later in the year.

Cordially,

I have seen the exact same. 18in. space for 1/32 aircraft next to 12in. space for 1/32 vehicles. Bottom shelf only. With this layout it gives the possibility that WM may continue to carry some items, but then the question arises are these new products or more of the same. As far as A/C, one would seem to think that the limited edition of 5,000 advertised on the A/C boxes would have been deleted by now. New products seems also to be less likely with the complete silence from all the major makers web sites. My guess would be we are just going to have to wait and see what shakes out in the next couple months. It may just continue where some parts of the country are very fortunate with merchandise, while others are shut out completely.

Its beginning to look like they are parking cars in thier warehouse!

Right now all the wm's in my ao I visited recently (about 5 off hand) are plentiful with 32x armor & 1/144 tanks and planes. Few figs here and there and the occasional 32xw 190. All the 32x armor is clearanced as well at $9.

Would any of that 32x armor be Panzer III Long-barrels or Porsche turret King Tigers?

This is intresting ...
I went to one of my closest Wally worlds which had about nothing last time I was there and I found 2 nice piles of 1/18th XD figures on the bottom shelf. I got down on my knees and sorted thru them. I figured that they'd all be DAK fig.s but much to my surprise I found 3 Brunos, 2 US 30 cal. MGers and 2 German assualt gunners :P I found it in my duty to give them all a new mission in MY forces 8) Although I do believe that I paid the normal $4.97 each. But perhaps XD is not quite dead at WM :)
