Flyboy, if you have the chance, would like to see you take some outdoor pics of your fantastic buildings. I'm just imagining how good they would look with the sun shining down and casting some shadows or even on a moody overcast day would be great

Amazing, fantastic, astonishing, awesome, beautiful. Your Buildings are all of those and much more! I envy your amazing skill in this hobby! Your work is amazing, and so detailed! Is that a folded B.A.R. bipod I see in the Sherman pic?!?! I made one of those and I thought I was the first. lol. All of your custom figures, vehicles, and buildings are just beautiful. This would look really good with some ruskies and a lot of rubble.

You should really post up some tutorials for painting armor, making buildings, making custom figs, etc. You are soooo good at this! The tutorials would be good for people like me who are inexperienced and do not have a very high skill level in this hobby.

Yea, all styrofoam. It's actually insulating foam. It works GREAT!

Right now I've been tinkering with making plaster brick ruble. It is a challenge because, you can't paint the bricks or they'll chip and reveal white, oloring white plaster is a pain, if too much paint is mixed in the bricks crumble....

I did find a product at lowes I'm going to try. It's a brick red dye for concrete/plaster. I've seen someone use it with great results! Only thing is, it might not match up to my buildings perfectly... I guess after the bricks are dyed, I can paint half of them the brick color I'm using. That way if they chip, it wont reveal white.

Here is another idea.

I am not sure if the mortar/ cement will work. I would like to know myself. Be careful because it is messy and once it gets into your clothes the dye will be a permanent stain.

But I do know that plaster is like a sponge when it cures. ( about 7 days )

You can give clothing dye a try.

Most grocery stores used to sell it .

Once the plaster is cured you can drop your bricks in the dye and you should be good to go.

Of course it will stain your clothes worse than the mortar dye.

So, cast the bricks and leave them white, then after a week or so soak them in the dye?

I will try that and try the cement dye.

My molding process is better though, much less work. You can see the color of the bricks with the stuff I was going to use. The color is not exactly like the bricks in my houses, but I bet I can airbrush my brick color onto them after they have been tinted. Then if a chip happens, it will look good! Still experimenting though. I have about 3 different shades of brick paint I use, for example, the darkest shade was on my "Creamery." My medium shade looks like the bricks in that link.
I also am mixing sand in my plaster, gives them an AWESOME texture.

Might want to try a cheaper dye first... Or even acrylyc paint (craftpaint like Applebarrel) watered down pretty thin... Just a thought, to save a buck.

Tried that. Takes way too much to tint them the color I want. Then, if too much paint is added, the bricks just flake apart.

Alright, here are the pics.


The color was added with walmart/Michael's cheap acrylic paints. It did not work, the final color was pinkish (Attempt 1), and purple-ish (Attempt 2).

The first bricks de-molded good, the second batch (More paint added to try to darken the mix) did not de-mold good. They just crumbled and did not dry right. I'm going to try a new dye, looks promising!

I made a European style brick. It's longer than the traditional brick we always see.

Still unsure on the final product, will it have rough cut edges or smooth edges? After all, it is rubble. Final price looks like it will be $10 for a bag of 150 or so. Will know for sure once I start producing them. Going to try to keep these as cheap as I can!

First attempt on top, second on the bottom.

Also, I will start molding and making: Cobble stones, Grey bricks, cinder-blocks, rough cut stone, and possibly unpainted plaster stone walls.

Those are incredible, and that building is nothing short of a work of art!

As always flyboy, really cool... You're inspiring me to give foam a 2nd glance. I'd kinda backed off it for my projects, wanting plastic, but you really show the potential it has and how it's so much less expensive than plastic.

I used some of the concrete color! Did not take much at ALL. A 10oz bottle was only $6.
The bricks in person look JUST like real bricks! They are a very red terracotta color. They do not match the color of the 21st bricks but I'm working on it. I'll try adding black-brown to darken them. However, I will be casting terracotta roof tiles and this color will look AMAZING!!!!!
